Looking for information on which Vacuum Pump is best for Drag Racing . We have researched and learned there is a 3 vane and 4 vane style pump . Also curious if anyone uses a 12 volt pump instead of a belt driven pump .

Best... Star Machine.

GZ and Moroso both have great pumps as well.

I have and do use all 3 depending on budget and application. You really can't go wrong with any of the pumps those 3 mfgr. Pick a company, talk with them about your goals and buy what pump they tell you to.

I have yet to see a battery driven pump capable of doing anything significant in an automotive race application. They have been used with sucess on motorcycles thou.

Star, Moroso, GZ, in that order. Heard too many problems with Aerospace stuff. GZ is good stuff as well, and doesn't mind getting trash run through it, but Star and Moroso are very easy to service.

No matter what you get, make sure vacuum control valve is pump mounted, not valve cover....

Star IMO

Had an older Moroso 4 vane, replaced it with a Star. The Star pulled 2" more, is smaller, lighter, and the fittings made packing and line routing easier.

I was looking for something the other day and came across this. I have limited space at the front of the boat engine and don't want to have to redo the frame of the back seat. Something like this might work for my set-up.

They all suck, which is what you want them to do. Some look better than others and there are different price points. I have a Star and their tank. Moroso pumps have probably been used on more engines than all the rest combined. GZ is probably best when used on a street/strip engine. The only thing I don't like about the Aerospace is that they aren't anodized on the inside. I have seen a few them gall up but most didn't and those worked well.

Star is a great pump.

All my engines get Moroso. I get 24 to 26 inches of vacuum using their 4 vane enhanced. I get great durability. They look good, work good. And Moroso is an awesome company who has supported the racing industry with great products for many decades.

As for an engine builder who says he wouldn't use them if given for free..... I'd find another builder.

The hundreds of Moroso pumps I have used, give me a pretty good record of authority in their quality.

Perfectly Said!

3vane works good for a wet sump. 4 for a dry sump
I know a lot of people do this and I know not everyone can use and or I guess afford certain parts. But if you are building a dry sump system. There are oil pumps out there that have the potential of pulling more than enough vacuum from the oil pump alone. If everything has been done right, you shouldn't have to run a vacuum pump on a dry sump engine...

The majority of the engines we build get the Moroso 4 vane enhanced with very good results,We have our own mfg valve which is both an regulator and a safety blow off .Also the Product Engineering Vac pump is very good.It does not get any forum time but is very efficient.Bill C.

+1 on Star.

I recently completed an engine build with a Star Sportsman pump and the dyno results were very impressive. My build thread on here shows a comparison of the pump connected versus disconnected with HP/TQ versus rpms.

Also Star was very responsive with any questions I had and some customization of the crank mandrel.

I’ve been running a GZ VP103 since like 2005. Hundreds of passes with no issue ever. I finally outgrew it (9” at 900+ HP) and upgraded to a VP104 with vacuum relief for this year. The GZ mounting bracket works well for my install. GZ has been good to work with.

I run the Star drive mandrel and it is the best design I have seen. Star was also fantastic to deal with and have several friends running Star pumps with very good success.

I don’t think you can go wrong with GZ, Star, or Moroso.

Would be interesting to hook up the popular pumps to various sized orifices and spin them at various rpms and measure the amount of vacuum vs power required at different speeds and rpms.....

Till then I guess the Moroso 4 vane enhanced will be the go to if I hit the lottery and wind up building another door car.
