Some people are just ungrateful assholes...

Took my employee's out for Christmas dinner. Told them ahead of time that our per person limit was $30 per person ($60 per couple). Before that, we went and bought $50.00 gift cards for them and my wife made some nice gift baskets for them. She also spent another $150 on door prizes to be raffled off during dinner. Just to keep things interesting. Before the party we handed them copies of the menu so they could decide what they wanted.

Well, we get there, things are going smooth. I opened up a bar tab on my own CC. Waiter comes around and starts taking orders. First four people ordered Steak & Lobster at $60 per plate. Next four people ordered Surf & Turf at $50.00 per person. Then the rest ordered Ribeye at a cost of $40.00 per person. My wife and I both ordered a nice $20 chicken dinner. This plus all the fixens and we ended up with a $1000+ dinner bill. This was for a total of 16 people. And that is plus another $250 on my CC for drinks.

Now I feel I'm a good boss and I like taking care of my people. But I swear, some of them are just ungrateful as all hell. They walk around acting like we owe them something all the time. They don't understand that this money comes out of MY paycheck, not the company. The company itself don't give us squat except a job. Tell you what, this is the last time we go to a restaurant. Next year, we will just burn some meat at the office. I will hand out some boxes of candy and if they don't like it, hit the bricks....:smt093

Best way to handle that next time is that if the limit is $60 per couple, purchase however many $60 gift certs before the dinner, and once everyone is seated, hand them out and have the waiter do seperate checks. See how many people order the steak and lobster then ;)

I would say the problem here is clearly the unappreciative employees, and not the boss.

Your employees completely disrespected you by doing that. Our office has the restaurant prepare a 4 item menu in the desired price range so that people have a selection and still stay within a reasonable budget. We make arrangements with the restaurant before as far as apetizers and desserts (no choice here). Our choices this year were two different chicken dishes, one seafood and pasta dish, one beef dish. Everyone had a good time with no complaints. Pardon the pun, food for thought.

THIS IS THE BEST SOLUTION TO the common problem.

I don't know about you but I am always mindful if someone is treating me to a meal unless they say "order whatever you want" I never order a more expensive meal than my host. same with drinks etc. etc.

You did the right thing.
Learn from this experience.
Next year NO party. Unfortunately others may suffer as well which is unfortunate.
If your employees are taking advantage of this situation, what is going on in the workplace? You may want to make sure everything is going according to your plans and not theirs, keep your eyes open.

Good luck.

I agree with you. Definitly something to work on for the new year.

If you want to see some amusing panic, wait until after everyone has ordered to hand out the gift certificates ;)

Damn 1% ers. LOL

Happened at my work once. Someone ordered surf and turf. The boss is looking over the bill and you suddenly hear him yell. "Who the fuck ordered the surf and turf". The guy was gone a few months later. Of course this was the X-mas lunch. We already has a X-mas party at a country club, a bonus check and a 401 contribution.

next year screw those ungrateful people who make ur business what it is today...SUCCESSFUL.....

the earlier suggestion sounds like a winner to me: "Our office has the restaurant prepare a 4 item menu in the desired price range so that people have a selection and still stay within a reasonable budget. We make arrangements with the restaurant before as far as apetizers and desserts (no choice here). Our choices this year were two different chicken dishes, one seafood and pasta dish, one beef dish. try it..that way you can find something else to bitch about..grinch
