Roots vs ProCharger Superchargers

Got a question! I am slowly getting back into the sport after 20+ year absence and technology has changed alot. Are ProChargers more efficient and make more power then the older Roots stle(8.71)? Trying to decide what path i want to take with a motor build next year. I plan to build another BBC (555 or 565)for a ProStreet Camaro. 90% of the time i drive it on the street for car shows, but like to hit the track a few times a year. Originally i was going to do a NA at 750-800hp and spray another 200hp, but i know there is a wow factor at car shows with superchargers.

I want it to look good but has to perform. Is it easier to keep a roots system tuned then a procharged? My goal is to be around 1000hp with what ever power adder i go, but must run on street gas(93) unless i am at the track. Is anyone spraying in addition to the supercharger? I already have the system in place.

thanks for any incite you could give.

Since i am currently running a 6-71 and have a few friends running pro-chargers, i would recommend the pro-charger hands down! better performance on pump gas, and better drivability on the street, unless you really need to have that big lung sticking out of the hood, go with the pro-charger

For simplicity and wow factor go with the roots. You can see it coming from a mile away......and it will stand out much more then a Procharger as far as a show car goes......My 555 w/ an 8.71 went an 8.45 at 3100 lbs. and with a 100 shot of NOS it went 8.15 @ 166. That was on race gas. I drive the hell out of it on pump gas. If you are starting from scratch go with e-85 instead of pump gas, or so i'm told. The motor should make more power and I am sure it will run cooler for street driving. If you are after more than 1000 easy hp on gasoline then look at a Procharger. Either one will work for your application, it will just come down to what you perfer as far as looks. I am more old school. The roots has torque "right now" no mater what the gear or rpm range you are in, which is kinda fun...... What kind of ET are you hoping for?

I think that there are arguments to be made on both sides . I would have to say my opinion is for pump gas you will probably have lower IATs with a procharger . But you can make both work pretty darn good. 1000 hp wont be hard with either blower type . Tuning is just different but not really one harder than another . Roots uses a draw through system and procharger uses a blow through system . If you want the wow factor nothing looks as intimidating as a roots sticking out of the hood . If you want a more low key design Prochargers are more compact . Lots of variables , just need to figure out what suits your taste .

if your just talking blower effiecency the Procharger or Vortech will make more power per size. If you want the WOW factor of how it looks go Roots. If you want large polished metal sticking out the hood go Roots. If you want it underhood go Procharger or Vortech. depending on what combo your building i think you may be able to find kits for any blower type you want to do.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!! Really not sure how fast i want the car to go. I am thinking low 9 high 8. It is a back half car with a Moser M9 rear with 3.89 gears and a wavetrac.

Are there any issues with one running hotter then the other? I live in the Tampa area, so its warm-hot most of the year. I thought about the e-85 but dont want to be stuck to only hitting shows that are in my neighborhood. I want to be able to hit any gas station i need to.

The roots heats the air charge to approx 275 degrees, much higher than the centrifical so you can typically run more boost without detonation, 15 lbs of boost is about max for a 6-71 on gas with no intercooler, this is from my experiences , i drive mine on the street on a regular basis also

Sorry, i meant does one make the car run hotter then the other. Prefer not to go cruising around town at 220degrees. My car tends to run hot and thats why i chose NOS over supercharger to begin with on this motor. But when i build the new motor and with that much power i will be changing out the radiator yet again to cool it. Its really tough trying to decide what i want to build. Still keep thinking i should keep it simple and do a motor 750-800hp and add a 200shot for the track days. 750-800hp out of a 555 or 565 is doable and streetable on pump gas from what i see.

LOL. Not me! I like my women to look like they need a sandwich. I'm just sayin' when I see a polished roots blower I say "WOW thats a nice LOOKING show car".....but when I see a big ProCharger I say "WOW that's nice looking, and its a FAST ASS RACE CAR!!"

I have to say "Prochargers are definitely more interesting when the hoods up". You have the blow off valve, the hat on the carb and the tubing; most people aren't use to seeing that stuff. I feel like I’ve seen plenty roots superchargers over the years and the thrill is gone. I would love to see a gear driven Procharged car at a car show; really rather see it go down the track.

to the OP I am sure you will have your stuff together but most every roots I have seen at the track wouldn't run worth a lick. I saw one that ran 6.60's with a 454 and 8-71. Everything else was high 7's in the 1/8th. I outran them with an N/A small block. When I see a big blower sticking out of the hood my first thought is actually that it is probably slow.

It really depends on what you like; in your face versus sleeper. I personally prefer sleeper and a ProCharger will give you that big time.

roots......for the wow factor and instant energey.
...
Get what $ can afford.. .start with 8-71.. or whipple..
..
and when you are at the track if you are not bracket racing and looking for points.. and looking to win the huge 'purse'.. enjoy it at the track just as you would at a show or out getting a burger. Who cares if a blow thru etc.. goes by you?

I see nobody has mentioned reliability. Seems like Prochargers are always getting shipped back for repair or blowing up. Roots blowers will out live several engines and still be good as new. He said he is building a street car that will see the track every once in a while.

Until he decides how fast he wants to go, it's really hard to make a solid suggestion. low 9's with 500+ cubic inches and a big tire won't be a problem with a roots.

Not all roots blown cars are slow, but many are and that's because some people do it for the "look" and don't tend to the details. They are easy to bolt on and that's why you see guys running 14's with a big blower, it's embarrassing and has put a stigma on roots blowers. Do your research and you can make plenty of power with a roots blower.

It you want all out HP then go get a set of turbos, roots not Procharger can touch them.

If you want a centrif. blower take a look at Vortech, from what I have seen they appear to be more reliable.

If you learn how to go fast with the roots you can apply it to really huge power later on...I started with a 6-71 on gas and ended with a PSI D rotor.

I agree roots on gas is a carshow joke but even less impressive is the procharger dyno sheets that never translate into a thing at the track.
Get a timing control and gear it properly and a roots deal will run hard...no weird boost curves to deal with.

Well, I drove my ProCharged small block to the track yesterday, took my tool box, winshield washer fluib bottle and chair out of the trunk. Ran a 6.005 and a 6.03 at 115. Loaded my stuff back up and drove home. In the last 12 months I have changed the oil in the car twice and changed the supercharger oil one time. That's it. Completely maintenance free and I am running the "baby" D1SC.

To each his own and there are fast and slow examples of both types I'm sure but I am a big ProCharger fan now.

I appreciate all the suggestions...Do any of you regret not going turbo instead? I dont think single turbo would do it for me in the looks dept, but dual is a thought? Yes its a street car and do mostly shows but want it to go as fast as it looks. I dont want to build a car that has so much power i cant make full passes. Too many times i see guys with gobs of power never make it down the track and since i only go a few times a year i want those times to be full passes.

Little more about the drivetrain; its a TH400 and a Moser M9 with a wavetrac and 3.89 gears, Ladder bar with Strange dual adj. coilovers. On the street i run 31x18.5 MT SR and track i run the MT Drag radial.
