Id say as long as they still stretch within spec then keep using them. Thats the main thing in my opinion. Pay close attention to bolt stretch and what it takes to achieve it and decide from there.

 

Or you can risk another block to save $200

 

If the rod bolts had their 'free-state' length measured and their 'stretch' length measured from day one, and each bolt has returned to it's free state length when relaxed (no longer in tension), you should be able to reuse them.

 

And I suspect you don’t have the free-state length so stretch gauge would be meaningless. Just buy new bolts and machine accordingly.

 

The ARP catalog used to say 20 torquings. Along about 1987, I asked them why.

The response was; "Because people ask."

I reused rod bolts....once.

Racing is not cheap.

 

Many times but I always use the same engine builder and he has detailed notes of all my engines so he knows the specs of the bolts. He tells me when it's time to change them. Never broke one yet in 30 years of racing. I hope he doesn't retire on me!

I will admit I also asked the Carrillo guy when I should get new bolts.
He asked are they CARR or ARP, I said CARR, he laughed and said when the crank breaks!!!

Carrillo makes their own bolts, only 2 to choose from...
Wmc-7 or the Carr bolt....
Carr bolts are lifetime, wmc-7 they say 15-18 torqings....
ARP does NOT make any bolts for Carrillo.

 

If i have any engine come in from a different builder they get new bolts period.

If your stressing about reusing rods bolts just change them. To be completely honest have you ever seen a ls break a rod bolt? Probably not especially if they are aftermarket rods and bolts.
