What is the best 3 speed planetary ratio for a na small block?
Would the stock set work well or would it like first gear to be numerically lower?

I really like the 2.10/1.40/1.00 set in my trans now. You can use lower ratio (numerically higher) in the rear and it transitions from gear to gear better with less drop in RPM between. I have a 398 ci NA SBC turning 9000-9200 RPM.

I went through many TH400 transmissions and ratios and always ended up going back to the 2.21 / 1.44 ratio. It performed the best. You have to remember, not only gear ratio to engine / tires on a TH400, but the internal drum speed that has to stop and change direction is also determined by those ratios. You can use power or save power with those 1st / 2nd gear ratios.

thanks for the comments. this is a 1/8 mile 275 radial car around 2900lbs. Currently rus 5.60 with a 1.76 glide and 1.25 60ft on back tires With a 4:30 rear gear. Converter I had with the glide hit the tires like a sledge hammer but was blowing through at the finish pretty good.

Can the proflite be built for around same money as a inexpensive glide build?
If not I'm going to stick with the 400 because this car will be getting a 1st or 2nd gear leave vb for a power adder combo we are building and would like to keep the same trans if possible.
If y her 400 is not worth any gains over a glide I'll just build another glide for now and build the 400 for the power adder setup.
Any input?

Ben what does your car typically run in the 1/8th?

Ok thanks. The proflite is not in my budget for a transmission so I'm out on that deal. Maybe if I knew I was dedicating my racing forever to being a na deal I'd save up and buy one.

Thanks again for the advice. I'd be happy to see my 4" stroke 7721 headed windsor lay down even a .30 on the radials so I'm going to put It on the dyno and figure out what the converter needs and go from their.

I'll attach a video Link of my car with with the 1.76 glide and 4.30 gear making a 1000ft pass and yall tell me if I have something to gain with the 3 speed.
Thanks again.

I am very eager to see what my 2.10/ 1.40 gear does for my blazer. I have had a miserable time getting it to leave and not stand on the ass or spin.

Proflite is quicker....period. less line pressure than a glide, lighter parts than a 400.

Walk thru the pits at any NHRA event and check out comp and superstock , proflites outnumber everything else by 10-1.

The best of the best that will run 20 dif converters thru there shit, vary the shift points until they find whats best for each, still can't get within .15 of what the Proflite will do.

If you are racing where every 1/2 horsepower counts....you need a Proflite
