I was wondering if anyone else has had any experience good/bad/indifferent between the 2 monster tach's with shift lights?

the autogage part # is 233906
VS
The older common auto meter monster tach with shift light

.....other then making your wallet about $100-$125 lighter.

thanks for the look

I have an Autometer monster tach that has given me zero issues but it is also about 5 years old. After many suggestions I will be ordering new autometer gauges also, hope this helps you out bud.

Back to the OP's question. I've never bought an autogauge but I've had Auto Meters in everything I've ever built and not a singe failure. Even had a Monster tach and the regular stuff in a mud truck for over 15 years with no doors and the back roof removed parked out side and never a problem. My BIL is a cheap ass and bought the autogauge water, temp and volts gauges. Can't remember which one it was but the face on one came loose and spun on it's side. Don't think he ever said he had an issue with the tach though.

My friend had one autogage tach and it had a few issues that may have been corrected. First, the shift light setting knob would move from the car vibrations. So we had to put a rubber band around the knob and push it against the tach face for resistance. Second and the biggest issue for me was the only way to test the set point was to rev the engine until the light came on. The autometer had a way to set the shift light rpm with the engine off.

Ok so they did update it. That was the way the Autometer was at that time. The autogage was the outdated Autometer that couldn't tested.

Never used Autogage tach, but had their water temp fail. The Autometer gauges feels heavier and I decided do I want to rely on cheap gauges on my $15-25k engines? No

ok... chatted to the tech line today on the differences from the manufactures stand point.

the biggest difference is the paid contingency's for the Auto meter tach's & gauges-- the Auto gauge brand does not have any. The insides are very-very similar in design, other then the new style of Auto meter tach has it's individual led lit markings on the tach face, where the auto gauge is like the old Auto meter tach-- simple back lit style.

Straight from the tech gent' ,
"If it was my money and I was not worried about contingencies, Auto Gauge would be the way I would go for a tach." "it has a proven track record, being it is design like the old Auto Meter tach that has lived forever"

hope this helps anyone looking for Auto Meter/ Auto Gauge tach.

I have a auto meter luner series in the bug love it blue back lighting and blue shift light. thing works great I picked it up used. but no issues. The autogauge that came with the malibu is 200 rpm off, it reads higher then the sniper EFI hand held by that much and sometimes more. If I had the scratch would be pming about the one above.

It's your money..but. I've had both and I'll stick with Autometer Sport Comp gauges. The Autogauge tach with a shift light wasn't accurate. It would change shift points and had to be checked before every pass. My Autometer Sport Comp was always on the money for the last 15 years. When it did give problems last year I removed it and sent it in for repair. They said the board was broken and parts weren't available any longer because it was so old. Then they offered to sell me a new tach for a ridiculously low price to replace it!
