My dad died a few months ago and one of the things of his that I ended up with was a 496 he had built for a '75 stepside truck that was put together but never fired. I got a little rev happy and broke a valve n my 540 soon afterwards and put the 496 in my Camaro to drive for the summer while the 540 turns into a 555.

Anyway the 496 has a good solid 4 bolt bottom end with forged crank and scat rods, JE pistons etc but the heads are 310 china heads and it has a very mild Lunati 231/238 @ .050" hydraulic roller. Heads and cam arent well matched at all and the best Ive been able to run with the combo is 11.5 in the quarter and it flat runs out of steam in the low 5000's. No idle lope. Just drone. I've decided to upgrade the heads to AFR 265's and swap the cam and intake out. Compression should kick up to 10.8:1 as well from 10.2:1. This is still going to be my backup engine but I'd like to run solid mid 10's with it. For a cam I'm going to try out the 572/620 HP factory grind spec'd at 254/264 @.050" and .632" lift on 112's. Got one cheap and its approximately the specs I was looking for anyway.

Anyone tried one of these cams? It looks not too big and not to small for my needs I'm thinking as most of my driving is street driving. I'll be dropping in a manual 4 speed at the same time so stall speed isnt an issue. Same 4.10 gears and 29 inch tall tires.

Plenty of people have built documented 650-700+ HP builds with 496's and those heads with hydraulic rollers that had FLAT high torque curves. The CNC version at 345/290 at .650" flows to within a few percentage points of much larger runner heads .

I was running a 3500 lb car 10.50's at 129 in street trim with a horrid 60 foot with the same heads.

Well, got her all back together today. Wasnt expecting this smooth of an idle with that much duration but the 112 centers seem to be moving it that way. Runs good and pulls hard through the low 6000's. Track isnt open until next month . Its too hot but seat O' the pants says high 10's. It'll keep me alive until the 555 gets back from the machine shop in any case.

I do like the captured front cam retainer ala Ford style. Timing stays rock steady.

Not really. Its a street car. The stealth is a good enough intake and I need the hood clearance. 10.5 to 10.7 as is and if I want to go faster I can spray it a little. Fastest I can go with my chassis is 10.0 in any case. This is the slow engine. Even with the 555 best I'll ever go is 10 flat even though it can potentially go faster. Its a street car that does some track time at a poorly prepped tracked . In any case 10 flat. Beyond that I'd need a full cage and that sort of thing really doesnt work on the street when I'm 6'4" and my head is rubbing the headliner already . Getting brained on a side impact isnt part of the life plan. Been thrown off a few tracks for going 9.9.

Not all that n]big a deal to take the training wheels off and put the correct safety requirements in/on the car. If ya gotta put a bump on the hood just git er done. You can then run that bitch out the back door and be safe, I think all was states is that with a couple key pieces that engine can operate very well with the handicaps removed. It's only power, :))

And why exactly?

The car will run 9's with some tuning. It has before and I had to back it off because I don't want to run 9's. If I run 9's I need a full cage instead of an 8 point roll bar. I had a full cage in there before and I cut it out because when I'm driving on the street I hit my head on the stupid thing. Not a big deal if its a strip only car and I'm wearing a helmet but its not. I don't really want a car I can only safely and comfortably drive at the track. The local track sucks balls and maybe I race 10 times a year. This is a street car. It doesnt matter anyway. If and when I do I race its a 10.0 or 11.0 index race or bracket race. I can dial the ET in to withing .050 sec of 10 or 11 as it is now. Please tell me how I would be gaining anything by changing over to the "perfect" cam in this 496 and trust me I've got single planes sitting on the shelf. The 555 when it gets back together will be optimized for what it is and even that I'll have to work at determining what I'll need to do to stop at 10 flat. That is as quick as I want to go .

540, really this should be a walk-in-the-park to run mid 10's with what you have. My lil 433 with oem oval 215 heads and sold 630 cam, at 3600 went 10.7 with a DOT street tire back in the late '90's. But has more compression.

If this deal doesn't run 10.50's there is something wrong somewhere. Look at Mark Jones's (VortecPro) stuff. His mild 467 @ 3600 would run 10.50's with little effort. With those heads on a 496 this should be just a camshaft away if this one won't do it.

Good luck

Oh yeah it'll run a 10.5 no problem. This is my low budget engine and it only got the AFR's because I got a REALLY good deal on them and I sold the other heads to a friend whom I'm building a 454 for. The cam was just over a hundred bucks and looks like its doing what I want it to. The old cam was just way to small to enjoy driving it. 5k and it would fall on its face. Its going in the 454 as well and will suffice for my friends needs.

The 555 is going to be a bit quicker and I may even have to sandbag that one to keep it over 10 seconds.

10 seconds is where I draw the line. I don't point race or travel to race to to me there is no point in building a "race car" per se'. Local track isnt open enough to make it worthwhile.

FWIW if you want to know how to get a smoking deal on full CNC ported AFR 265's PM me ( $2100 delivered ) . Theres a trick.

The 3610-1 head is a full CNC head. AFR is VERY strict on MAP pricing and its hard to get a good deal but... ( and I dont know this is actually the case but I think it might be ) If you happen to find a ghost website that hasnt updated their pricing in a few years because maybe they arent in business any more Summit does price match so...

CNC cheaper than non CNC

Ok. After driving this thing for a solid day heres my report.

Old setup ...496 10.2:1 compression rectangular port 310 CC pro comp heads. 231/239 @.050" .600" lift . Rectangular port Stealth intake 850 CFM holley. Pretty much laid down at 5000 RPM. 850 Holley 4000 RPM stall Edge 10" .11.5 in the quarter at 117.

New setup... 496 10.8:1 compression oval port AFR 265's. 254/264 @ .050" .623" lift . Oval port stealth with 1050 Pro systems. Tried it with the 850 Holey. 3700 stall. Changed to a 1050 Pro systems and it kicked up to 4000 stall. Same converter. Where it laid down at 5000 before it fells like its taken on a new life at 4500 and charges HARD to 6500 to the chip. WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. Waiting for the track to open a month from now. Mid 10's easy. If I had more torque the tires wouldnt stay on the road.

Is it an airport most of the year? While most tracks are winding-down do to the fall and winter coming, you guys are not even started yet? It's not like you're in the South and closed for the summer heat........... What's the deal?

Its the heat. It's usually 105-110 this time of year and that track is the absolute worst prepped drag strip Ive ever been on even in the best times. Its been as hot as 117 though. This years a little cooler with just a few days over 100 so far . The smoke from all the forest fires blocks the sun and has kept it in the mid 90's. Can't see the hills 2 miles away.

Its been open. They just close it from mid august to mid september.

Heat in the south Ha.

You obviously are from Eastern Washington. You want heat, spend a summer in the South East! Hahaha

I lived in Western Washington the first 30 years of my life. Spent allot of time in Eastern Wa during the summer. It definatley gets hot there. But I never experienced heat until I moved to the South East. The humidity makes it unbearable sometimes! Lol
Those fires this year are bad. Stay safe up there!

I'm in Yakima. Grew up in the south though and even worse Texas.

Yeah, the fires have been pretty bad this year. Not so much here but up in BC and the smoke is funneling down into the valley here. Reminds me of going to visit my grandparents in L.A. in the summer in about 1970.

So got to the track yesterday with the new 578/620 cam and AFR 265's.

Best run on this engine before was 11.5 @ 117 with the small Lunati cam, china 320 heads and 4000 stall converter.

With the GM/Crane hydraulic roller and 4 speed I was blowing the clutch away in 1st gear. Awful 60 foot times 1.62 sec slipping like crazy with the 11" DF centerforce. That clutch is going to go bye bye. Still slipping pretty bad through third . Best ET of two runs before I gave up not wanting to completely destroy the clutch before I can get a replacement was 10.92@128. Changing the clutch should put me in the mid 10's at 131 ish maybe better.
