My dad died a few months ago and one of the things of his that I ended up with was a 496 he had built for a '75 stepside truck that was put together but never fired. I got a little rev happy and broke a valve n my 540 soon afterwards and put the 496 in my Camaro to drive for the summer while the 540 turns into a 555.
Anyway the 496 has a good solid 4 bolt bottom end with forged crank and scat rods, JE pistons etc but the heads are 310 china heads and it has a very mild Lunati 231/238 @ .050" hydraulic roller. Heads and cam arent well matched at all and the best Ive been able to run with the combo is 11.5 in the quarter and it flat runs out of steam in the low 5000's. No idle lope. Just drone. I've decided to upgrade the heads to AFR 265's and swap the cam and intake out. Compression should kick up to 10.8:1 as well from 10.2:1. This is still going to be my backup engine but I'd like to run solid mid 10's with it. For a cam I'm going to try out the 572/620 HP factory grind spec'd at 254/264 @.050" and .632" lift on 112's. Got one cheap and its approximately the specs I was looking for anyway.
Anyone tried one of these cams? It looks not too big and not to small for my needs I'm thinking as most of my driving is street driving. I'll be dropping in a manual 4 speed at the same time so stall speed isnt an issue. Same 4.10 gears and 29 inch tall tires.
