How did you handle things?

If that’s what you’re doing now, you either put the boss in his place, or you quit. Not really any other option.

Don’t ever let anyone get comfortable disrespecting you, because once they get comfy, you’ll never stop it.

unfortunately, through HR

we have a toxic female leader in my department, a DEI idea that took over when previous leader retired. Not happy unless she makes others miserable. Barking orders like she owns the place. Lazy, and almost zero help. They always turn management over every X amount of months. This round of managers can't stand her either. We're almost all guys so we knew we couldn't say anything to her. Union even warned her. Management and union were all too happy to assist us in writing up a complaint against her because if we handled it the old fashioned way, we'd be gone.
Had her meeting with HR, gave her a warning. Management and union reminded us she is not above anyone and can't give us direct orders. Since that time she has toned it way down, she's ignored and when tries to give orders it falls on deaf ears. She knows she has zero support from anyone now and just walks away

I worked for a guy who was pretty intense. You'd do a job for a customer, get good feedback from the customer, and then get to the feedback from the boss...He'd pop by where you were working and say "Can I see you in my office in about 2 minutes." That meant 120 seconds. Not 110, not 115, not 125. 120. And he'd always start out, "Yeah, Frank was really tickled by how quick you turned that job around. Real happy with the service and the work. But..." Then the little spiral notebook would come out, and there'd be a list of 10 items that he wasn't happy with. Never 8. Never 12. Never 5. Always 10. And some would be really stretching it. Like, the way the parts box was taped, or maybe the label wasn't perfectly applied to the box. When it was applied at 4 AM at the end of a 20 hour shift...
Just brutally pointless. I had nightmares about working for him for a good five years after I left.

My wife comes home every day with stories of something demeaning or rude that her pharmacist/mgr said to her. She reported this mgr to HR once before, and the mgr was reprimanded, but the abuse has slowly started to ramp up again. I keep telling her to report this person again, but she wont.
I had a center mgr like that, nit picked everything I did, even though I did the job the right way all the time. He picked on the wrong guy, though, as I had no problem standing up for myself or for my coworkers. Had some epic shouting matches that even the union stewards couldnt stop, and I was right every time. Center morale was dying after a time, though. After many complaints, he was finally removed from our center and we were able to recover.

Yeah, you cannot overwrite an individuals character, they can be tuned in occasionally but will slowly return to their true nature. This is a remote office which could be great if everybody got along- here there is no manager to 'temper' anyone- even our admin thinks she's with HR, she doesn't talk to me now..seems I'm not deferential enough.....but that's a good thing.

Life is too short to work for a son of a bitch, regardless of the pay or benefits.

In the past, I've worked with people that bitch about the job, pay, hours, everything and anything. But the one thing they never try is going elsewhere. I've heard the "I'm too old to start over" bullshit so many times, yet I constantly prove it's wrong. Started my current job at 61 and it was my fourth job in 5 years. Before that, I worked at a company for 29 years, thought my loyalty meant something, only to find out different. So I quit, moved out of state, stayed there until I was recruited to a better job, then when it turned sour, didn't bitch, just found a different job. When my current job opened up unexpectedly, I took it. Am I happy now? Oh yeah. But things change constantly and I've accepted that. Happy today doesn't mean happy forever. Keep current, do your best, but always be ready to go if you have to. Life's too short to be miserable.

Best advice to anyone not happy is quit asap and start your own business. You will shit your pants the first year and probably second, but if you can survive the first 2 years, you can make it all the way. I got fired from a commercial banking position years ago and it forced me to do my own thing. Never again will I be at someone else's mercy. My advice to those who can't stand it anymore is quit now, you can't get the time back. Be tough 💪🇺🇸
