What is considered a fast street car

I live in the DFW area and was wondering what is considered a fast street car. I know you can put turbos, nitrus or pro chargers on but I'm talking about old school n/a cars. I'm building a 57 belair with a 400 sb and hoping to get it in the mid to lo 11s. In your opinion would this be considered fast?

I don't know how different it is where you're at vs where I'm at but my Jeep runs high 10s @ mid 120s and at the local hangouts there's a lot of stuff that's quicker. But just tooling around day to day, there's not much that's going to touch it on the street. Seems that the quick stuff only comes out Friday/Saturday. If it's quick enough to put a smile on your face, be happy with it. No need to get into a measuring contest and quit enjoying the car.

This ^^^^

There is always going to be a guy with more money (faster) the street and driver will do a lot to offset that but not nearly as much as it would have done before the show.....there are plenty of shops now that if you have a few hundred K to spend will build you a turn key car that a drunk could make a quick pass in.

11's will be fine, most of the faster stuff only is driven limited times, and doesn't come out unless they think there is money to be made, and the upkeep cost is much bigger..
Those new muscle are not running 11's on the street with street tires.. nor is anyone running 9's or faster..
sticky tires with a life of 5-9 thousand miles or less are not street tires, they are just dot #'d drag tires..FACT

While I’m well aware my car is not the quickest thing on the street, I’m also completely confident that the cars that are ACTUALLY ON THE STREET that could outrun it are few and far between. My car runs mid 11’s. It’s an old school NA Big Block with a full stock interior and all factory accessories.

While you may not be internet fast, you are “boulevard legit”!

Who gives a shit if its fast. 11's for that car is moving. Its a '57, so make it cool and a driver with a few onions under the hood. Drive around in a 30 mile radius and count how many '57s you'll see, then count how many Camaros, Corvettes, Mustangs, Challengers or imports with gay wings/graphics you'll see. You won't see another '57.

That’s actually my 55 BelAir to a tee. I have a pump gas 500hp 400 sb 5 speed. It’s a lot of fun I’ve surprised quite a few people in the last 18 years since I built it. Like someone else said, you won’t run across many that can hang

I think a lot of people read too many magazines and spend too much time on the internet. Then they get a skewed sense of how common 8 second cars actually are. My neighbor is one of those guys. He doesn't even have a hopped up car and never has. He reads car mags though and thinks that half the cars on the street are hiding 1000hp under the hood.

A legit 11 second Street car is still quick in my eyes.

Exactly!

I cant believe the amount of "car guys" who turn their nose up towards cars running in the 10-12 second range. Most would shit their pants running those cars all out.

I can drive 100 miles a day for a month straight, and I doubt I'll come across anything that'll run anywhere close to 11 seconds, let alone 8's.

My car runs bottom 10’s. I put thousands of street miles on it every year. I have very very rarely pulled up next to anything remotely fast.
Same here ^^^^^^^^

Unless anything 10's and faster is running around on drag radials, they aren't hooking worth a shit anyway. Granted BF Radial TA's are worthless for traction, but anything under 65ish and if the cars not in fifth, the 245's are going up in smoke and damn near dangerous once the engine gets into it's powerband.

The bar has been lowered by a bunch the last 20 years

My car ran mid to low 12s when i parked it 10 years ago and was one of if not the quickest car in town. Now a decade later its mediocre at best BUT......its not a Toyota Camry or a Ford Focus type car and gets looks wherever i go. Also most cant tell a car runs 8s or 18s so just build the 57 how YOU want and what makes YOU happy and dont get concerned about a hp number ot timeslip. Have fun and enjoy your car. Not everyone has one and most will be jealous of you even if it had the old Stove Bolt 6 in it.

To me, an 11 second car that's Naturally Aspirated is fast! My '79 Mustang Cobra runs mid to high 11's with an N/A small block 347/5-speed combo and I can drive it everyday if I feel like it. Around here, there's not too many N/A cars in that range unless they're big blocks. Most of the cars that are faster all have power adders such as Turbos, Superchargers, or N20.

As for mine, I drive it to work 2 or 3 days per week, take it to the cruise nights and car shows, and drive it to the track and back (2.5 to 3 hours each way) It's got a full factory interior and doesn't look like a track car at all.
