Two vultures were just sitting on the peak of my roof

I was reading and heard something on the roof.
I went out front and they were just sitting there looking at me.
I walked around to see if there's a dead animal and they started circling around me about thirty feet up.
Yeah, it was kind of spooky.
Nothing out front so I went out back and could smell it immediately.
Unfortunately it's under the deck so they can't get to it.

I never knew they locate carrion by smell too.

Turkey vultures have an extraordinary sense of smell. They have been known to be able to smell carrion from over a mile away which is very unique in the bird world. The turkey vulture has the largest olfactory (smelling) system of all birds.

Hell yes, they are the best scouts if you're looking for something dead. In the past I've tossed dead animals into the overgrown vacant lot next door. Our properties are completely covered by Live Oak Tree canopies and within 24 hours there will be dozens of those buzzards in the surrounding branches and a dozen more circling overhead.

They’re actually kind of interesting. We have a large mixed flock, 70+ strong, of Black and Turkey Vultures. They’re protected and were really a problem for a while, tearing up people’s roofs, awnings, etc. one guy had his roof replaced 3 times within a short period and his insurance company told him he had to do something because they weren’t going to keep paying for it. He put these metal rod thing with big spikes all over it along his roof ridges. That seemed to take care of it. They don’t roost in the neighborhood any more, not sure where they go.

On mornings after it’s been raining, we pass a field with horses and there’s a vulture sitting on every single fencepost, wings spread out, trying to get them to dry in the morning sun. Quite the sight.

There's a hog confinement a few miles north of me. Some days there are hundreds circling their feed elevator. They roost on top and the ones circling look like a black tornado. Closest house used to have them on the top of their unattached garage. Roof always looked like it had shit all over it.:( They have a steel roof on it now and they don't seem to sit there anymore.

How in the hell did two old crotchety women like Pelosi and Waters manage to climb on your roof? I thought it was a rumor that they flew on brooms...

They land on my barn all the time-you will see several with their wings spread, sup the sun
kills the bacteria under the wings. I had 2 trying to nest in the loft, but ran their asses off and boarded it up.
I wonder if they have super hearing also, I was moving some stuff and several mice ran out from under
it, wasn't but a couple minutes and some were circling above.
