Cliff notes: manual shift, no vacuum or detent hooked up, 2 3 and R work great, wont go into 1st, acts like its park.

Long story:
I rebuilt my th350 last year with a hughes kit and trango shift kit, worked great for a while. The shifter cable got buggered up and somehow the trans got stuck in 1st gear. I drove it home 30 miles in 1st, not being gentle on it, got home and stuck in 1st no matter what I did.

I pulled it apart and the fibers and steels in the forward drum were all welded together and bent in a cone shape. Most of the crud was contained in that drum though, the rest of the trans was pretty clean.

I rebuilt it again with another hughes kit, 2nd 3rd and R work great, but it wont shift into 1st gear now(manual shift, no vacuum or detent hooked up), it acts like it is in park when shifted into 1st, doesnt even roll easily.

Any ideas what to look for?

Thanks, I'll check that when/if I have to pull it back out. I was hoping it would fix itself, that didnt happen, just took it out, 2nd and 3rd are great, hold good, but I was rolling in 2nd about 10mph and dropped it to 1st and it was like a brake was applied, the car came to a stop. No clicking or other noise, Im wondering if somehow the band is applying in 1st?? Is that possible?

The problem seems to be zero intermediate clutch clearance aka I put three fibers/steels in a light duty th350 that calls for two. Checking the intermediate clearance was the one thing I couldnt find how to do on the internet so I figured it must just be end play....hahaha yeah right. Found this out after the fact http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/T-350_rebuild_tech#Intermediate_clutch_clearance and got Ron Sessions book. 2-3-R all worked great but it beat the hell out of something, the fluid that was new last week is now very opaque gray.

X's 2^^ If your gonna use 3 frictions and steels there, use a piston designed for a 3 clutch set up or measure the thickness of 1 friction and 1 steel and machine that amount of the piston you have. I try and run .060 clearance in this clutch pack. Also you can get a center support from a 700r-4 or 4l60e and replace the original center support( I've seen the stock 350 one crack at the roller clutch area). Its beefier and is a direct drop in replacement. good luck and let us know how it comes out.
