Our house has a flat tar and gravel roof. Had a leak in it for the first time since we lived here last weekend. I think I've got there area where the leak is, but wondering on the best way to repair. YouTube seems to be all over the place on ways to repair.

My parents home in Cocoa Beach is that type roof.. Find the leak in the attic then go on the roof and rake the rocks away. Pour the roofing tar with fiberglass in it on affected area. Then rake the rocks back.

Make sure you get tar with fiberglass or it;ll all end up in your attic. :)
Sometimes it is that easy. Majority of the time the water is traveling from somewhere else 😉

Flat roofs suck and will always be a pain in the ass.

Time for a final repair...…..

Yep. Anything less is a temporary patch, flat roofs suck and leaks are motherfuckers to find and fix!

Two ways to waterproof it.
1. Remove all loose gravel, go to Home Depot pick up 94lb bags a gray Portland cement and Lanco bonding agent. Amount depends on size of roof and how much gravel is still stuck in the tar, low spots etc. Mix your slurry coat in a trash can on roof consistent to pancake batter, dump barrel over and spread out with a floor squeegee. Apply a primer/sealer to promote adhesion, spray and back roll it just roll out elastomeric roof coating. First coat you want a 5 gallon bucket to go around 350 sq ft. Apply second coat once the coating isn’t tacky.
2. Same as above but dint take gravel off roof. Obviously, you will use lots of cement !! If you have a helper .... take it off. And then you’ll need a place to get rid off the gravel.

Message me if you need any guidance. I know this shit well 😃

Peel and Seal roof repair is what I would recommend. Dad had a mostly flat tar roof on his garage. It was getting old and brittle, so it would get leaks. It's what we would use to fix it. It's INCREDIBLY sticky on the side that goes against the roof. Clean all the dirt/dust off with some glass cleaner or something, and apply to the problem area. Instant fix.

Available in a variety of colors, widths, etc. Click on the drop down box for other colors/widths/lengths, etc. Some colors are cheaper than others. Aluminum seems to be the cheapest.

Honduraschris & others seem to know what they're talking about,

I didn't,
and it took me 3 of 4 tries to learn 😁

My story:
flat roof in the back of my house started to leak,
I got a gallon can of roof patch and went to town.
Sealed up nice and completely stopped leaking....

for maybe 6 months 😁

I did that at least 2 more times because it was going to work this time 😁

I may have even ripped out the damaged sheetrock in the bathroom below and re-tiled it all after I "fixed" the roof. 😂

Eventually I called a roofer,
he covered what I had with rafters and went rubber right over that.

It never leaked again 😊

I defence of my stupidity,
it was a nice flat roof, maybe 20x20,
and I it was accessable through the finished attic.

I had hopes of putting a roof deck up there "someday" and planned to do the roof and deck in one shot.

To fix it properly you will have to spud the rock down to the felt layers. Doing this with a good long gabled scraper when it’s cool out is best. Then once the leak is located get some roof cement and fabric. Make the repair and spread the rock back over the repair. Most likely is a nail that has been drawn up by the sun. Look in the area that it is leaking and look for ants. They will go to the water. You might have to spud a good sized area to find the leak. If you replace it you won’t be putting a tar and gravel roof back on. They aren’t done much anymore

If its really hot mopped tar over felt, unless you are cash poor or not planning to live there long I would look at replacing the roof. If its not really a flat roof and has some pitch to it I would consider just doing it yourself. I had the same thing happen on my houses addition, it was about 18 yrs ago on 15 by 18 section of .3 in 12 pitch roof and I did a complete tear off and replaced the sheathing and did the roof in peel and stick roll roofing by Georgia Pacific not a problem since and it looks just as good as the day I put it on and it only cost me about a grand and two days work.

👍🏻

there could be a lot of gravel up there. That’s why I gave him 2 options for waterproofing it. It can be a DIY deal with help, correct weather and so on. Congrats on you doing it yourself. I make $ doing all types of roofs but really enjoy helping property owners save real $ doing it themselves. I’ve helped out a few old timers as they still believe they are young enough to do the job themself. Just another way to help and make friends
