So we found a crack between a top head bolt hole and water passage, other than that the late model has been great, I have a 66 289 block and another 5.0 block . which to use for 425hp bracket and why....I already use hydraulic short travel link bar lifters. This in an NA on e85 3 inch stroke 10.2 to 1 deal. I know about SHP blocks, I know about a Windsor, etc..... and I am willing to hear opinions and experiences thanks need help

Pick one.

The only things I dislike about the 289 block is the slightly shorter cylinders (not a huge deal) and 2 piece seal. I hear that quality 2 piece seals are getting harder to come by.

Have you thought about drilling and tapping through the middle of the crack and screw in a set screw with some green thread sealer on it?

If you use stock head bolts those cracks may not happen, the bolts give and not the block.

Thanks for the reply and the info, I measured cylinder length, .070" difference on these 2 blocks, i thought i would have it converted to 1 piece rear main, depending on cost

I heard that the 60's 289 Mexican block are stronger but hard to find.
I have done the factory blocks for years, by the time they are magnafluxed, hot tanked etc you still end up with an rpm limited and power limited block. I started using Dart Iron Eagles and am currently using a Dart SHP on a build. It was 2300.00
