I'm trying to find a reasonably priced US made 4.250 Stroke BBC Crank. Any advice?

I trust you guys and wanted to see what your thoughts are. Its going in a 565 pump gas street/strip deal that will make around 800hp, not going to see over 7200. 6.385 Oliver rods and 4.600 Mahle pistons round out the package.

Get ahold of Scott Foxwell on here, same user name.

If I remember correctly, Howard's forges crank's in Kentucky, machine's them, sell's them.
Can't remember if they sell the forging to Callie's or, also machine's them for Callie's??

Scott will know.

I have a used set of 9 billet Oliver rod's if, you don't already have them.
The 9th rod will need to be weight matched.
Also, have a set of 8 Crower forged rod's, light use.

Does anyone know for sure what city in the USA are Callies cranks forged? The one I had was a Magnum XL but it had a Japanese sounding name etched into the counterweight. I have also been told they are a Japanese owned company forging. I have also been told that the Lousiville foundry has not done custom aftermarket/hi performance for several years. I always assume if you can not get a straight answer from the crank manufacture of where in the USA their forging comes from, it is offshore. If the crank is less than $1000 it is probably offshore forging.

I think Crower is USA made. Byant, Winberg, and SCAT billets are USA made.

The next best thing to a USA forging is a Molnar or Compstar, JMO.

The Callies Dragonslayer is the same domestic forging as the high end stuff, just less detailing. Around $1,500. I have put mine (4 3/8") through hell getting my tune up/setup right and it's still good. The Compstar is a foreign forging for 40% less and has a good reputation but I refuse to go with non-USA sourced parts, old fashioned I guess.

The forgings for Callies are done in Michigan or thereabouts if I recall what they told me correctly. Same place that does most of the domestic specialty stuff. Materials and finishing differ. Callies uses steel from Timkin which is headquartered in Canton, Ohio.

Lunati used to also have domestic forged cranks but I think they have gone over to the dark side.

FWIW: your application doesn't sound too demanding and I admire your insistence on a domestic source even though you could get away with lees. Is it patriotism/enlightened self interest or desire for quality that motivates you?

I believe the Callies forgings are from Japan. Even if Louisville Forge hadn't made any for years, Howard's bought them 10,000 at a time, or some ridiculous number. Inventory isn't usually a problem unless they are "in process" at Callies.

I'm running a Howard's now, but that's because Callies didn't have one for me when I put the engine together. I'd prefer an 8 counterweight crank, especially since I run an aluminum block. Big block chev, 613"

Honestly, I'd run a Molnar without hesitation too.

I looked into this in detail last time I bought a crank, because it's important to me. The raw forgings for the Callies Compstar line only are sourced over seas, finished in Ohio. All of their other cranks (and rods) are sourced from the US. The Dragonslayer is the same raw forging as the Magnum crank but not as much detailing. Consequently, it's heavier.

Callies, Howard's, Lunati, Manley, Crower, Scat, Molnar, Eagle, Comp Star(by Callies) and Ohio would work well in your build and can support much more horsepower for future build upgrades.

BBC cranks are hefty chunks of steel that will take a lot of abuse. I wouldn't be worried about any of these Forgings listed for your build.

Yes Some of these are imports but still quality products that will support your need. You won't need to brake the bank then leaving you a little more $$$ for other more beneficial areas of your build.

Thanks everyone for the replies!

To answer a few questions about why I am going US made on the crankshaft. Although there may be some good import units out there I am proud to be from the US and my living comes comes the US so I feel it is right to support our workers and the quality products they produce anytime I can. The engine and the entire car is 100% US made parts and labor and I plan on keeping that way. I would like the Callies unit but they are not available right now so its either wait or find someone that has one in stock or go another route. I normally wait and get what I want and go by the old saying "Buy the best and then you rest" and it has always proven true. If anyone has a connection that may have a new US made 4.250 stroke crank for sale I would appreciate it if you could let me or them know I am in the market and ready to buy today. Thanks again for all the input and replies.

Howards Pro and Crower are USA made if you can't get Callies. Usually a long wait time on Callies for Magnum. They take a Dragonslayer they have in stock and send it back thru the shop for machining, lightning and balancing. 4-6 week wait. At least that is what I was told when I ordered one. 8 weeks delivery to me.
