Anyone heard any updates from the NHRA on if they mandated the diaper and made the belly pan not acceptable?

I heard there was a lot of discussion around it. Contacted the Div III director about 3 months ago, he said they were thinking about it but he wasn't sure what they were going to do. Googled it, searched NHRA's web site... still can't find anything.

I'm a few hours away from finishing my belly pan. All I could find in the 2012 rule book is what I see below. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't some sort of amendment out there I couldn't find.

In classes where specified, a belly pan may be used in
lieu of a device attached to the engine. The belly pan must extend
from framerail to framerail and extend forward of the harmonic
balancer and to the rear of the engine block and must incorporate a
minimum 2-inch-high lip on all sides unless specified in Class
Requirements. Minimum number of slots or holes in the walls to
clear frame, steering, or lines permitted. A nonflammable, oilabsorbent
liner mandatory inside of retention device.

I would imagine if they were not it would defeat the purpose. At least that's the assumption i built mine with.

What is everyone using for an absorbent pad? Will a regular grey pig mat work?

Here are a couple pics of what i threw together.

Thanks for everyones input. Mine is near complete. 3 inch tall sides. I just need to finish the mounting tabs and it's done.

I heard rumors about pans not being acceptable in 2012. As I said, I talked to a director about 3-4 months age and he said they were considering it but couldn't give me a answer at the time.

Looks like I'm good to go with the pan. :)

I'm just not sure that a catastrophic failure (rods, crank, block) at speed is going to be contained in that pan - no matter how much absorbent is in it. Friends of mine have had these failures with a diaper and not a drop on the track/under tires. For now the pans are legal so that's my .02............................ JB

I think most tech at most places have this opinion. If you have a pan or a diaper you are atleast trying. I don't think they are worried about penetrations on the sides and such. My home track owner stated "Ive been cleaning up oil for 40 years, whats another 40?".

no minimum thickness and yes aluminum is allowed, iv seen many cars with an alluminum pan race. if you wanna be safe incase of blowing a motor up and chucking parts out the side of the block then a diaper is for you, a pan will do nothing but catch a bit of the oil drops, but it IS still legal.

To be safe my vote goes for the diaper

For ease of use and to help the motor cool down between runs my vote goes for the belly pan.

unless its a supercharged motor then you have to have a diaper so your damned if you do and your damned if you dont

No SFI cert is required unless required by class rules. The rules were posted and that's about it. The diaper or pan (non-sfi) is required for any e.t. classes 9.99 and faster, at divisional races or NHRA races, also. That does not include the summit e.t. points series (or whoever is sponsoring this year).
