How many years are radials good for

Specifically the Hoosier DR2 radial, unmounted, stored in a barn for a project. Any thoughts on shelf life of these?

Can’t speak to those tires specifically, but most sticky tires with soft rubber compounds do not like to freeze at all. If you live somewhere where it gets cold and they have gotten well below freezing for very long, I would consider them questionable.

I’ve seen it happen with soft street tires.. had a set of Falken Azenis RT615K+ tires that I accidentally allowed to freeze.. a good hard freeze, down to about 10° one night, high teens another night, about four nights total well below freezing. They were never the same again. They hardened up like rocks and even in the summer when it got hot outside they never recovered.

"stored in a barn" is a little vague. were they laying on a dirt floor, stored on a shelf? where's the barn located? and most importantly, what's the production date on the tire? have you been able to see them in person?

Yes, exactly like I said.. so if they’ve been stored in a barn where they have been exposed to multiple below-freezing winters, they’re very likely at least somewhat compromised. But there’s only one way to find out.

New rule of thumb is 10 years from manufacture date installed on a rim on the road. After that rubber etc chemicals in tire starts drying out including weather conditions could cause a failure.
Storage may extend life since tire is not mounted or filled with air so not stressed or distorted.
But who knows, if you value your life and / or car buy new stuff and get on with your life.

You came here to ask a question, you’re getting answers. What the hell?

Most people aren’t storing their active race cars in unheated barns in places with real winter.

Weird echo on this forum.

Anyways, anyone want to contribute to the question in the thread title and post 1?
I‘m tempted to start a TOBT thread to sort this nonsense out. There’s apparently no getting through to some people.
