Have any of you guys had to "modify" your ceiling in the garage to gain more height ?

I am putting in a lift,,,,have 10' ceilings,,,,,but would like more height so i can get the car all the way up,,,,,and to be able to store a car under the lift.

I found a diagram from another website,,,,that i posted,,,,he went from 10' to 12.6' with the modifications ( see link below for pics )

I am thinking of doing this

Do you have any pics of your mod's to your ceiling ?

How big of a deal was it to do ?

It looks like they put in more bracing with 2x4,,,and also applied sheets of plywood,,,per the diagram....

thanks,

That is exactly what I did. I have 10 ft ceilings in my 24x40 pole barn. I put in a 4 post lift.

What I did was sandwiched 2x8s across at 12 ft height and nailed, drilled and bolted together for support . I did this across the 2 sections I cut out.

Been this way for 2 years now and had 2 major snow storms (I live in New Jersey) and have had no issues.

I did not need 12 ft ceilings for the whole garage and it is easier and cheaper to heat.

I will try and post a pic

Yah.....what he said ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ :-D My advice would be to contact a local truss designer/builder. I like to think I'm a pretty smart guy, but as someone posted in my thread, there is a ton of calculations that need to be done to ensure a safe roof capable of handling the loads associated with snow, rain etc. At the end of the day, I know my design is safe and will not give me any issues down the road. Oh.....and it is a shit load of work!! Get your hoist together and use it as a work platform, especially if yours has casters like mine! I hate to think of the injuries we would have uncured if I did not have the lift!!
