If your thinking about buying them.....don't do it period
If you have them in a carb that runs even 110 race fuel.....get them out and do it now.

This is Ironhorse427 JR my dad is Ironhorse427 . 3 years ago dad and I started to build me a 1972 Rally Nova to race in High School and now Sportsman class and at the time Dad built me a 650 dbl pumper from parts he had. It has the HP main body but all the rest except metering plates is standard Holley, Quick Fuel parts. Well instead of spending the extra coin for a new set of bowls with the sight glass already in them we ordered a pair of the plastic sight plugs to screw in the bowls so you could see your fuel level instead of using the brass screws and getting fuel all over the place.....well we have only this year gotten the car finished and to the track a couple of times.
So its never really been raced till this late summer. Long story short I go out to the shop this last weekend to do some work to my Nova and I started it to let it warm up and was inside watching the gauges while it sat on jack stands and ran and all of a sudden there was a ka-whoomp noise and flames coming out from under the car....under the hood ......inside the car there was fire and smoke everywhere ! Anyway Dad had insisted that I have a fire bottle system and am I glad I did.....I killed the power and pulled the handle for the fire system and this gave me enough time to get out and grab the big fire ext. And put it the rest of the way out.....After trying to call mom who had heard the ka-whoomp noise clear in the house was already half way to the Shop taking the hood off (its a fiberglass lift off race weight hood but still takes 2 people to lift it off nice) and explaining what had happened she helped me with the hood and we started to look around and survey the damage done by the fire which turned out to be very little thank god....the only thing we found was both the little plastic sight plugs had turned soft and were falling out of both fuel bowls allowing raw 110 race fuel to squirt all over the engine ....one spark set it off and there you have it a big re wire job and a trip to the car wash to spray off all the fire ext. Stuff and replacing some parts that got scorched is way better than going to the hospital or worse. One thing......we now have a set of Bowls with the sight glass in them on the Carb.
Scary thing is I called Jegs where Dad bought them to let them know about it and the tech guy says oh yeah thanks for calling but thats been an issue with those for quite some time......?????? Are you kidding me ?......and the keep selling them ?.........Wow.....they didn't offer us a credit or even a "man that sucks were sorry"......oh well if you have them in your car.....and don't wanna take them out.....good luck to you.....but if your thinking about using them instead of the brass screw or just buying a set of pro form even fuel bowls with the sight glass in them......don't do it or you might wind up way worse than me.

Your a fuck face. Trying to be a keyboard bad ass.
This is not trash or be trashed.
So take your stupid ass over their and let the real racers talk about real racing issues.

This is a issue.
We saw this same issue this summer. A friend of mine brought his car to the track this summer so we could tune it.
I went to set the floats and the plugs were melting..

I didn't install them in this car. When it showed up they were in it. He just got the car running so they weren't in it long..

This is a good thread to the fact a guy may just buy a used carb and these clear plugs are in it and wouldn't have gotten to read the package the plugs came in.

This thread may save a guy from losing his car or house or prevent a injury.

Thanks OP and sorry about your luck..

Well I really didn't read all that shit but I've used them and they're a shit product. I put them on my truck and the gas dissolved them in no time. Just pump gas nothing exotic, the threaded part melted and the outside part fell off. I guess I'm a dipshit tooo!

In my "yuth" I once had a '60 Ford Falcoon with the mighty 144 CID, 85 BHP six. It had a Holley 1 barrel with a GLASS float bowl. I did manage to drop it and chip it, so even back then, I was "fixing" things.

On a side note, I also managed to trash the tiny 3 speed gearbox. If I recall, a .....uh, "cough" "rebuilt" at the junk yard cost me 75 bucks. This was about 1967

I see them on occasion, and have used them long time ago. They don't last very long, not worth the risk. Fuels soften the material and they break thru the threads. Set your floats with a caliper and put the brass screws back in. With the new sight glass bowls bowls the material is good for any fuel.

As has been mentioned, are there different grades of plastic?

Reason I ask is, I have gone thru 3 Pro Systems carbs over the years. All selected and installed at BES and all have had the sight glasses which, I believe, are plastic. No one has ever mentioned this to me before or even include brass plugs with the carbs.

I put moroso ones in the six pac I had on my car back in the late 80's and they are still in the carbs. I was using them up to 3 years ago.
Might be the new fuels. They had 110 Sunoco in them most of the time.

So your on here to warn others about your mistake for buying some cheap plastic sight plugs that jegs and other vendors sell. That's fine and if it saves others problems than the post you've taken out is well worth it.

Nothing governs this industry and shopping for cheap quick fixes via mail order rags does not help racers either. Take the time to learn how to properly set float levels and no one will have any issues. The proper way is to set them off the carb and upside down. No window or glass should ever be incorporated into a float bowl, nor should a fuel pressure gauge be on a race vehicle during operation. If you feel you have a fuel pressure issue, than install it to check your issue. If you feel you have a float level issue, take them off and set them correctly and re-install.

Why shouldn't there be a fuel pressure gauge during operation? You could end up chasing another issue when it turns out to be fuel pressure. And even with a gauge you don't necessarily get a chance to see it on the top end, especially if bracket or index racing (where you are focused on driving the finish line). I learned of a fuel pressure problem after the end of the season, reading datalogs, yet nothing showed up in the car's performance.

I think he was referring to the initial angle the throttle linkage is pulling from, placing excessive force on the throttle shaft bushings.

To clear some of this whole mess up....that was my son who is the OP . I told him it was ok to come on here and maybe help some other new guy or kid learn from the mistake.

First of all I bought them so he could see the fuel level in his bowls on the 650 HP carb we built from parts and pieces I had laying around the shop so he could understand everything in his carb and how it worked and why.

2nd. They were the Jegs brand plugs not the Moroso ones.....I assume there might be a difference in material seeing as how some say they have had them for years with no problem.

3rd. They were never intended to be in the carb as long as they have because I was always going to get a set of bowls with the new windows in them that work great and nobody has had major issues with.

4th. The fuel levels to his bowls were set by me with the bowls off and holding them upside down. I have used this way of setting them for years and never had an issue for racing or street driving period.

5th. And lastly.....To those who ripped my 17 yr old son a new one because his post was so long or said he was a dumb shit.....If you have an issue with him ( this is his first drag car of any kind because we never had the coin to spend on Jr. Dragsters ) so when he typed the post he was still scared and excited for several reasons the main one being he and I have been building his Nova since 2010 and this last summer was the first chance he had to go to the track and race it and honestly we both were really proud of how this wrecked pile of junk turned into a really good looking Rally Nova Strip/Street car but I think he was more scared because the car was on jackstands in our brand new shop.....the kind of shop every guy dreams of all his life.....and he was more worried about burning it to the ground than anything.
This is why I gave him my permission to come on this forum not T.O.B.T. because guys would take the time to understand hi is a young kid just starting out and maybe cut him a little slack......but the wanna be arm chair keyboard tough guys came out of the woodwork to pounce on him and try to make him feel like an idiot.....well guess what.....you guys are the same ones who are going to be rude to some young guy at the track who asks dumb questions and or laugh at their car and act like your king shit and they are not worthy of your time.....you idiots can't see that by doing that you are chasing away the next generation of racers or your teaching them to be just as big of an ass hat as you are because that is what they think is what it takes to get respect......you sicken me you ignorant wretches.....your not even smart enough to see every time you do that stupid shit your only hurting your self in the long run......so you go ahead and keep running your mouths instead of your cars and we the guys who do care and actually want to help these young people keep cleaning up your shitty dumb ass mistakes. I know this much it will be a LONG time before he ever post's anything on this or any other Drag Racing site period and all because of a couple 3 ASSHOLES .....by the way if any of them have Issue with me or my Kid......if you get to feeling froggy and wanna jump....just say the word....cause I AM OLD SCHOOL AND I BELIEVE IN TAKING CARE OF THINGS LIKE THIS UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL....

No one knew his age until you just made mention of it. It's a good thing that he can learn from yours and other mistakes. It's how you learn right from wrong. jegs sells a lot of knock off junk/shit. Buyer beware. They do very well on this knock off stuff. If they really cared about the racer, they would re-evaluate offering this garbage that they make quite a bit of profit margin on. I've heard horror stories on fuel and oil fittings breaking as well. You get what you pay for. We need to take responsibility for our own actions. No different than trying to rely on the government for advice and assistance.
