Copper head gaskets are painful..

Hi guys..

So.. I've got a little 498 - an old school build with 12.5:1 SRP pistons, Eagle rotating assembly and Merlin cast heads...

It was built for nitrous use- the previous owner was shooting 450bhp on it- so has big ring gaps, o-ringed and has copper head gaskets. Which might be fine in an ideal world, but its now got a habit of weeping coolant into the bores - and it needs the head bolts torqued to make that go away.

I don't plan to shoot any more than 250bhp on it - so I'm guessing I can live without the copper /o ringed setup?

My real question is - can I pop the heads off - chuck the copper gaskets and o rings in the skip - and put 'normal' gaskets in it for an easier maintenance life?

Or - does the machining for o rings cause me issues?

Many thanks for thoughts?

I would consider the o-ringed copper gaskets the best way for what you are doing . Unless you torch one or somehow damage one, they can be cleaned up and reused many times. Important to put them back on the same side they come off of.

My racing program always improved when I quit trying to see what I could get away with, verses fixing things properly....

I take your point - and its a good one... but this motor is now fitted to a car that is insured and registered to be on the road (not that it really is) - I'd like to be able to occasionally drive it around the block without worrying that it'll need head gaskets retorqued when it gets back!
