W/OUT A BATTERY??? CAN U SPLICE IN THE WIRES???

I was wondering the same thing. I was thinking that it would be ok but didnt see how many amps the winch pulls.

 

You're going to pull more amps than a 16 gauge wire can handle. You'll either pop the fuse, or burn a wire. Just get a small 12volt battery, and wire that to be recharged from the tow vehicle. Or run at leats a 4ga from your battery to the rear pf the truck to tap into, but don't try the trailer wiring harness

 

16ga is good enough for a power window motor..

I was thinking min 4ga for a winch.

I was also thinking of running an 8ga to my battery on the trailer so it can piggy back off of the alternator while pulling.

 

i have mine going thru my 7 wire plug for my trailor been working for years, i use it every day. i just ran one hot wire from the battery to the center wire on my 7 pin connector and ground wire from the winch to the bolt holding the winch down

Thats what I did. Superwinch sells a kit for it. I ran a 4 g wire from the truck battery to a disconnect mounted under the trucks rear bumper then put the other half of the disconnect on the winch wires.

 

x2 i wired my truck like that, and my motorhome !keeps weight off the tounge,andbatterys are always charged!

I have set some up to use a jump box

 

We ran 10GA from the battery to the center pin on the 7 pin connector, then 10GA on the trailer side to a battery. So when the trailer is plugged in both batterys are tied together (so the truck is charging the trailer battery as we drive down the road). Then off of the trailer battery to the winch, and work lights.

I know this is not what the orgional question was, but just throwing our solution out there for anyone else looking. I agree that if you dont have/want a battery on the trailer the seperate disconnect is the best way to do it.

my partner welded the winch and a place 4 the battery....got 2 finish the battery tray...........

 

i used a small welding lead 1//0 i think ran it from the auxilery battery to my tool box in the bed of my truck - put welding quick disconnects on each end - i just pull the cable out when i need it and then i have 12 big amp source at the back of the truck. grounded it to the trailer.
