ive looked everywhere to find it.it was an animated cartoon with singing rocker arms in an engine. they would sing "were the rocker arm assembly....we don't like dirt!"
I originally thought it was an STP commercial but I could be wrong.
the song was sung by the Clancy brothers who also did a few gasoline commercials. I remember one with a big tanker ship and the song "was bringin home the oil".

I believe that was a Mobil commercial with a guy known as Mister Dirt.

I found this on a old tv commercial discussion forum. I guess it wasn't the Clancy bros............

I recall fondly a couple of spots in the early '70s that featured Irish-style jingles. Mobil was promoting its "detergent gasoline" in animated commercials (one had the voice of Rodney Dangerfield; another, Phyllis Diller), and one spot had a Clancy Brothers-type group singing: "We're the rocker arm as-sem-ba-lee, as-sem-ba-lee, as-sem-ba-lee, we're the rocker arm as-sem-ba-lee, and we don't like dirt!" This was before Mobil had those live action spots with Ronny Graham as "Mr. Dirt."
Around the same time, Gulf Oil was running spots (mostly on NBC News) with shots of one of their tankers in Bantry Bay, with the Celtic-flavored jingle: "Bringin' home the oil, boys, bringin' home the oil... sailin' home to Bantry Bay, bringin' home the oil..."
I think these commercials contributed to an early appreciation of Celtic music. (That said, I'm not impressed with the recent Miller 64 spots' attempts at an Irish jingle.)

It was a Chevron commercial

.The Rovers were my first exposure to Irish music when I was a wee tad.
Aside from their freak hit with Shel Silverstein's "The Unicorn," their
greatest contribution to American culture was their role as the Rocker Arm
Assembly in a Chevron gasoline commercial, singing the immortal lyrics...
"We're the rocker arm assem-ba-lee, assem-ba-lee, assem-ba-lee
We're the rocker arm assem-ba-lee and WE DON'T LIKE DIRT!

(Bridge:)

A detergent gas-o-leeen
Can keep your engine
running smooth and clean!

We're the rocker arm assembalee and we don't like dirt!"

After their brief stateside vogue they were very popular in Canada, and
appeared on the CBC many times. Others will probably give you more
specific information.

Sooooo .... it's great that you found the commercial, but the bigger question is, did you ever hit the newbie thread? (LOL)

Honestly, this must have been driving you crazy to keep looking for it this long. Well done sir, well done.
