In the process of moving and have rented a house in Texas. Need a lawn mower my wife and daughter can use. Was thinking about going with a battery one. Anyone using one and have any advice good or bad? Brands to look at or stay away from. I would rather have a gas powered one but I won't be there to cut the yard and don't need the extra hassle of trying to tell them how to start a gas mower.

EGO is the best battery powered mower but not cheap.

As to your comment on explaining how to start.....Not sure when you last got a new mower but mine is about 6yrs old and all you do is squeeze the engine brake and pull the cord to start and release the brake to stop. The mower has started first pull since new and has never had any service at all.

However I have run fuel conditioner (ethanol shield brand) since day one.....the same is true of my pressure washer, string trimmer, chain saws and back pack blower...they all work flawlessly.

Its my belief and experience that people assume that gas motors have the same issues they did in the 90s but nothing could be further from the truth. As long as you run a quality fuel and conditioner and keep the gas in sealed containers you will rarely have a problem.....PS I live in MD and do not bother to drain my gas powered tools over the winter and the fuel remains stable as long as its never kept for longer than 1 season at a time.

Mine's an older model, but I love it. Push the button in, pull the safety thing back, whirs to life. And the older gentleman who gave it to me had a huge yard, and never had problems with it running out of charge. And it does a really nice job, too!

Thank you for your valuable contribution to this post...

I've had an 80v Kobalt non self propelled mower for 4 years now (this is the start of the 5th season) It has not skipped a beat on me. It came with 2 batteries and the charger. My yard is fairly big so it takes one battery to cut the front and one for the back. If the grass gets too long though it really eats up the battery. Might take both batteries to do the front then recharge and then cut the back. That is the only drawback.

That being said I busted the mower out to mow this season and both batteries seemed down on power. the grass was not even that high and it took both to cut the front. New batteries are $160 a pop... we shall see how this goes. there is a 5 warranty so I'm going to look into that. edit 5 years on the mower and 3 year on the battery... So $330 for 2 batteries

I am now in my 4th year with a GreenWorks 60 Volt 21" . Very satisfied . Starts every time .
It can mow my 1/5th acre yard entirely on about 1/2 of the main battery . The package also included an
extra half capacity battery as well .
It has a sensor that kicks in for tougher areas , and then goes back to normal when that is done .

I have a toro self-propelled 60volt 6ah mower. I use it for the trim around my yard. Battery last approx 40-45mins. I had a Honda harmony II gas self-propelled mower before I and prefer the toro. Its lighter and cuts better. If you have tall grass, the mower increases the speed and battery doesn't last as long, but it charges in about an hour. I ended up getting their 60 volt blower as well. I like it and when you use the turbo button its more powerful than my Stihl hand held, however, the 2.5ah batter last like 7 mins. The 6ah battery last 30 mins or so. I prefer using it for light yard clean up and pull out my Husky 570 back pack for the big jobs.

I started looking at electric mowers myself...so tired of cleaning carbs and dicking with them every year...But I only really need it for trimming & small areas... I see Milwaukee came out with one (it just came out) but its 1K (the two 12ah batteries it come with are half the cost 250ea). What I really want is a small electric rototiller and was hoping to cross the mower & rototiller with the same brand/battery. Researching I read Milwaukee is expanding their Fuel M18 line of yard tools to 100 tools this year and 300 by 2024. Not ready to spend 1k on the Milwaukee yet but I'm tempted. Online reviews are mixed. They say its defiantly the most powerful electric mower they have tested.
I'm really liking the electric M18 Fuel Milwaukee yard tool bundle I purchased... and their other line of household/mechanic tools are great and offer a huge selection.

Love mine. 3 neighbors and my parents bought one after I did.

Holds 2 batteries and mowed down 12" grass at the lake like nothing.

Greenworks is what I have. I've had it for 3 years now with no issue. Also have the blower and trimmer.

I’ve got a Kobalt that I’ve had for 4? Years now. No complaints, no issues. Self propelled, quiet, fast, good battery life. Mower is light, built ok for home use.

Not a good choice if ya let it get grown before ya mow. Best if used on a schedule. I’ve done over grown lawns with it, kind of a bit of a pain in the ass waiting for it to bump up into full power. A manual switch to activate full power would be a better option. It eats the battery at full power.

Like I said, no complaints really, used as it’s supposed to be used it works fantastic.

I have the Kobalt 80V, this will be my 3rd year with it. Bastard will drag your ass around the lawn if you let it, plenty of power. Motor actually speeds up when it starts to get loaded down in high grass. I have what I'd call an average size yard, I can mow 3 times on a charge. Would definitely buy again.
