Trying to put together a 28 spline pinion on a ford 9 inch. All new with strange center support i think it is the N1917 (black forged aluminum one.) When you tighten down the pinion to get the preload you need the nut still has threads showing. Seems like the 28 splint yoke doesn't want to go far enough down... The yoke is the only used part but is this normal? I though the top of the nut that is not yet engaged is what helped hold the nut on cause it is deformed...

There is no washer between the nut and the yoke but I was putting one between the yoke and the small bearing. Now that I think about it do you need the washer between the yoke and the small bearing? I don't think I put one on the bigger 35 spline pinions......?

FYI talked to Strange and this pinion support was designed for a stock yoke if that means anything. Having the my machine shop cut down the face of the yoke 0.100" so the nut goes all the way down.

It is always something!

I have not put it together yet. Just got it cut. It was just a lot more work than it seemed worth to try and make a mandrel to hold the yoke and face the back. The nut was up about .040" on the threads so cutting 0.200" off should give a lot of thread engagement. We will see tomorrow. Would it have been ideal to face of the bearing side sure but all your really sacrificing is some drive shaft length and in this application the case and pinion support is way over kill for the power! That said I'm still no 100% on the whole thing just want to be sure this nut does not come loose!!!
