Car builder says no need for a trans cooler. Car will have short drives of no more than 15 miles one way to a cruise in and will get 1/8 mile racing. Are you guys running a cooler for your powerglide? Thoughts?

Be stupid not too. Any little bit of cooling will help transmission last longer. Get something like a b&m stacked plate cooler or if you can and want , get one with a fan built in from someone like derale or whoever
Do most of you use the little radiator looking one that attaches to the radiator? I want a good setup as a trans is not cheap. If you don't use that type and use the ones that have their own fan where are you mounting it? Car is like a Nova, Ventura, etc.
JeffB, any street driving at all requires a decent cooler. What part of the country are you in? I have a new cooler that I will never have a use for that should do what you need.
I have a B&M plate style that replaced a tube style. The TCI tube ran cooler by a little bit. Drag race only.
Both in front of a VW radiator with a factory VW fan.
I drove it to the track a couple times but only 1.5 miles.
I would not drive 15 miles without a cooler. You know You're not going to idle the whole way there!
All out Comp Eliminator cars would loop the cooler circuit to save weight but would tow to the lanes and back to the pits.
I just replied to your other thread.
You need to find someone to help you with your program.
We don't know your goals or class if any? You never mentioned engine or ci.
No way I'm driving a 8" converter on the street with out a cooler or any size converter for that matter.
It sounds like you need some local knowledgeable people to help you along.
Run a cooler, I use the B&M stack plate. Don't cheap out on the hoses! I had Orme Bros. Make me a pair of teflon lined hoses and use AN fittings on both ends.
A heat sink is at best a "better then nothing" solution that should only be considered for drag racing. If the car is driven anywhere other then dragstrip it needs an adequate cooler.
If its just a track car you dont need a cooler on a glide. When i bought mine from ATI the cooler holes were plugged. I have never ran a cooler on my car. Street car would probably be best with a cooler of some sort or maybe a radiator with the trans cooler in it.
This is what I ran on the truck when it was a puller and still driven on the street. Lots of rotating mass and a relatively loose 5500 converter. I called Derale, told them what I was doing and they came up with this. Worked great in summer heat and is being used on the drag truck as well.
If you have room and don’t end up with a cooler that has a fan built in, check out tru cool. I put one on my 1/2 ton with 4l60e that I pull the trailer and car with. It’s like 22” wide, 9” tall and 1.25” thick. Was pretty cheap too, for what it is. Been on there nearly 2 years , driven several thousand miles and no issues
East Tennessee. Builder has put that heat sink style on it. Looks like a long cyclinder with fins on it. I wanted the TCI fin type or that new one out that has its own fan. Probably will change it out over the winter. What you have?
Jeff you can add a fan to that style and even make a aluminum shroud like the one posted very easily
