An old Mossburg 500 is still one of the best defense weapons for the home, everyone knows that sound when you rack a round. You can put light, red dot, butsotck shell holder, sling, etc on it also. The four letter agencies recommend #4 buckshot for home defense.

I've been doing a small bit of research on shotguns the last few weeks, from what I have read or watched, for reliability, pump is the way to go. If you do go semi-auto, put a lot of rounds down range to get used to how it operates and get practice in clearing jams/hang-ups of rounds, you want to be very proficent clearing the weapon, god forbid it jams when you really need the firearm.

$.02 from a novice .

I love a Mossberg 500, specifically I love the placement of the safety vs a Remington 870 but I think the 870 is a bit of a nicer gun. Doesn't feel as sloppy when cycling a shell to me. That being said, I chose an 1100 so the wife doesn't need to pump it.

I bought this Mossberg SA20. I love it. My first (but not my last) gun purchase.

I thought a lot about one of those. First, I wasn't able to even find one, so it was pretty academic. Now, I think they are becoming easier to find. How many rounds have you put through yours? Any failure to cycle/jams? Take care. Tom Worthington

This is my current setup, I've had for years. But need to add lights. I love the LiNQ™ Wireless Laser & Light | AR-15 | Official Crimson Trace but not sure of its reliability. And reliability is what gets us through some bad situations. That's why I always liked my pumps. But my wife isn't proficient with it. I think she manages the AR better, probably more because of the recoil. If I had a shotgun in an "AR" style she may do better.

Kel Tec KSG. 00 buck in one magazine tube and slugs in the other. 14 rounds of FU. 00 contains 9, 9mm balls that will not feel good. .50 slugs will stop most anything. Throw a quality red dot on top and you are set.

That said....I have a G19 and AR15 at arms length at all times when home. If I have to send a family member to grab backup they will return with the KSG.

My preference is a bullpop 16 round (or 32 mini round) for maximizing CQB benefits.
I retired my Beretta 1201FP from HD duty and bought a DP12. They're not cheap, but nothing is as cool as this one.

The closest thing I found was the KSG, but the KSG beat up your knuckles on ejection and 2 less rounds.
No $$$ mags for either of these 2 fine Bullpop choices, and can reload on the fly as you expend cartridges.

As for AR15's being better ??? There is no evidence to support that subjective claim......
Because a shotgun puts waaaaaay more hurt on a target then any mouse caliber 223 does, even if it fragments.

Now don't get me wrong, I think an AR15 is an incredibly good HD option, but shotgun is superior for maximum carnage.
You can't blow off a limb with an AR15, or detonate a skull with an AR15

Plenty of hodgies took more then 2-3 rounds of M855 to finally go down, and the speculation is always that they
were doped up with no medical exam to authenticate those theorys. You don't need more then 1 shot of buck and they're
not getting up easily if they even snap out of it. NOTHING beats a shotgun in CQB for power & mortal devastation.
