How much does mild steel tubing weight per foot vs chrome moly? Thanks

If it is the same wall thickness the moly would be heavier due to the density of it. For roll cages you can use .083 moly instead of .134. Our 1-5/8" x .134 erw weighs 2.05lbs per foot. The 1-5/8" x .083 moly is 1.47lbs per foot.

1 5/8 and same wall thickness
The SAME outside diameter
and the SAME wall thickness...
BOTH weigh EXACTLY the same.

1.625" x .095" wall thickness in 4130 and mild steel weigh
1.552 pounds per foot.

Because 4130 Condition "N" tubing is
stronger in certain respects, it has been
determined that you can use
THINNER tubing in 4130 "N" than mild steel.

THAT is where the weight savings comes into play.

Roughly 1/3 LESS weight for the same amount of tubing.

1.625" od .065" wall weight 1.083#/ft. --- 4130"N"
1.625" od .134' wall weight 2.134#/ft. --- Mild steel DOM

4130"N" MUST be TIG welded.
Mild steel can be MIG or TIG welded.

as already said a lot of money to be spent for little savings ...im sure there are other areas you can find the weight difference that wont take a ton of money

1-5/8" / .134 wall Mild Steel ERW - 2.134 lb per ft
1-5/8" / .083 wall 4130 Chromoly - 1.367 lb per ft.

(These two sizes are the industry standard for Drag Racing Roll Cage construction)

EXACTLY .767 lb per foot difference

In other words,.....when talking to your buddies,....roughly 3/4 lb per foot

An average 8.50 / 10pt cage is going take about 60ft of tubing to complete,.......
82lbs for Moly
128lbs for Mild Steel

A difference of 46lbs

But the value of a car with a Molly roll bar/cage is higher.
Whoopi Fucking Do,......

Who gives a Rats Ass,.... unless you plan on going faster than 7.50's.

I Would never buy anything with a mild steel in it
NEVER,.......is a strong word.

If 50lbs of extra weight (due to a M/S cage rather than C/M) is a deal breaker for you,......then you would probably be missing out

Hey guys! I saw my name mentioned on this thread, so I thought I would chime in with a comment or two.
I wanted to elaborate on some of the comments.

All steel tubes that are the same OD x wall thickness, regardless of whether they are mild steel, 4130 chrome moly, stainless, or even the new Docol R8, will have the same theoretical weight per foot. The weight savings is when you switch from mild steel to a stronger grade and use a thinner wall thickness.

Now, 4130 is our signature product, and most are aware that we do not sell any Chinese chrome moly. Most of our "race car" sizes are made by Webco Tube, a US mill, and our name is stenciled along the length of the tube. Many of the fill-in sizes could be Webco, Plymouth or Benteler.

ALSO! Presently, we have some special pricing on 4130 tube going on right now.
We have two sizes on overstock - these are sold in full lengths only, and this special is for a limited time (don't know it when it will be pulled)
1.375" OD X .058" $2.05 per foot
1.750" OD X .095" $2.90 per foot

Additionally, we have been able to reduce pricing on our regular stock of 4130 tubes.

Contact me for more information. You should be very pleased.
