POR-15 is junk!

Use some kind of epoxy paint.

I like KBS because you can spray it through a gun. POR 15 is brush on and tends to look brushed on. As for longevity, I'm using it on the frame and axles of my 4x4 and the paint has, so far, been tougher then the rocks. One thing about spraying, though, get a harbor freight envirohater gun (suction) and plan on throwing it away when you're done spraying.... adds $15 to the cost but the result is pretty good.

 

I was gonna do the brush on rust preventer then either brush or aerosol the topcoat. It's pricey but from what I've seen at the NSRA meet here, they have a great display. Just wanted some other opinions.

POR15 (the original) is designed to stick to rusty metal and as such probably won't do well on a clean housing.

I couldn't bring myself to paint over rust...

 

I used KBS. Won't use it again. Looks like shit no matter how you apply it. just use good automotive primer and paint.

 

Yup just did the rockers on my truck, I let it sit for a day outside after before I undercoated it and it fucking yellowed in six hours of sun.

 

I used Parker Industrial paint on mine. If I were to do it again I'd have my friend spray it with bedliner.
Probably never touch it again.

If you do decide to paint it prep is key.

 

I paint most parts like undercarriage or whatever with a single stage urethane for cars. Looks nice and is tough as hell. I re-painted all the equipment in my shop like this, it's ten years later and it all still looks nice.

 

I use POR,but its for rusty things.
I coated my new Moser rear back in the day with Eastwoods chassis black,rattle can,and it still looks great,and is easy to touch up if I knick it.
Ive also just started using rustoleum only rattlecan stuff and have found it to be just as good as the higher priced rattlecan.

 

I used POR on my 10 bolt and wound up sanding most of it off as it looked like shit. I then used vht epoxy paint in a spray bomb and am very happy with it. It is tough as nails and looks good.

 

Thats what I ended up using on my Dana 60. It sees lots of street miles and is holding up well!

 

As already stated...if it's clean and rust free no need to waste time and money on either. Spray it with either epoxy primer then paint or an acid etch primer, sealer and paint of your choice.

 

I used POR15 on the battery tray on my '69 Firebird back in the day and it held up for years. I just knocked the surface scale off and painted it on there and a few spots in the floorboard.

 

THe KBS is the same have to paint over rust it will work on clean metal, big difference is the KBS coating has some flexibility to it.

 

Same bs por-15 tells you just use our metal prep and it will stick to bare metal it doesn't and even sprayed on it looks like shit.

 

A good black epoxy primer (Summit sells decent epoxy primer under their name and it's priced good) and then a single stage urethane top coat.

 

Powder coat that sucker.

POR 15 works very good....On rust! Does not stick to anything unless it has rust or surface rust. I am redoing my camaro after doing it in 1999 and everywhere I used it still looks like I just put it on. I would Epoxy it and paint it like others have said or powdercoat it.

100% for Powder coat, I have seen the POR15 just recently on a new diff housing & it looked a treat, guess it wont hold up to well

 

I have a few cans of etching primer that I was gonna use on some aluminum wheels but sold them before i refinished them. Guess i'll use that and a good topcoat paint.

ive used por15 many times with no issues ...seems that some people dont understand directions or how stuff works
