I have a Scag ZT mower with a 48" deck. It is now about 18ys old.
For the last few years I have been having problems with grass sticking to the deck then it will drop off and the blades will shoot out blobs while mowing. It looks like ass with hemmorhoids. 😐
This started happening as the original paint began to wear off and the grass seems to stick to the rough finish.
My am going to have it sandblasted and paint it with something.
I thought about glyptal.
Anybody think this will work or have any other suggestions ?

I am cutting 2 acres so there is no way I am raking all that shit. LoL

Just use machinery paint like for a tractor implement. Can get it anywhere like tractor supply, rural king etc. I always spray the bottom side of my mower deck with WD-40 and I also do it with my bush hog. Clean as a pin at end of year.

Get the black chassis paint that is sprayed through a paint gun. Or if you really want it to last then take the deck off and have it sand blasted then powdercoated. That will be the only real way of ultimate protection. Any sticks or rocks will make quick work of any rattlecan paint.

Had my deck hot dip galvanized. Remove all spindles, idler pulleys and gauge wheels. Sand blast or chemically strip all paint and rust. Be sure to over drill all holes .025" to .040" so the bolts will fit after it is dipped. They charge by the pound. They weigh the deck before and after coating. Cost about $100 a few years ago. Had mine done at V&S Galvanizing is on the south side of Columbus, Ohio. They also have plants in Millington TN, Owego NY, Taunton MA, Redford MI, Perth Amboy NJ, New Castle DE, and Jonestown PA. You can check out their web site at hotdipgalvanizing.com.

Had mine hot dip galvanized. Remove everything to the bare deck. Sand blast or chemically strip all coatings and rust. Over drill all holes .025" to .040" so the bolts fit after dipping. They charge by the pounds of galvanizing applied. Cost about $100 a few years ago. Had mine done at V&S Galvanizing in Columbus OH. Check out their web site for more locations. www.hotdipgalvanizing.com.

If you ever wanna end it all, go work at a galvanizing plant. Every chemical they use seems to be boiling hot and just waiting to kill you. lol

You would be wasting your time painting the under side of the deck. I have mowers with 4000+ hours on them and they haven't had paint unter the deck for about 3900 hours. My bets are that your problem has to do with the type of grass you are cutting or that your deck is not properly leveled. If you are cutting crabgrass it's gonna clump. If your deck is not level (usually 1/4" lower in the front than the back) it could clump. Paint is not your problem!

Thanks for the replies guy's.
Deck is a welded deck so it is still solid and why I want to descale and then sandblast the rust that has formed.
I have been over deck measurements and make sure the tire psi is always ok as well as sharp blades and have even checked the spindles for play with a dial indicator.
The only difference is the finish or lack of under the deck. I have to scrape the built up grass after every cut now. As soon as I start to cut the shit sticks to the freshly scraped dech then builds on to itself from there until it is heavy enough to drop of the blades catch it and wing it.
When the mower was fresh it was a once a year thing to knock a little build up out of the corners and around the spindles after an annual oil change, and whatever other maintanance was due but rust started getting underneath the edges of the scratches and gouges and would just lift the finish off.
From what I can tell, these things were powdercoated from the factory and the rest of the mower doesn't look too bad for it's age.
I think I am going to go with the pipeline epoxy after sandblasting and see how that goes. If shit sticks to that then I will spray or wipe one of the other suggestions on it.
I only have a few more years at this place and my new house will have much smaller lawn and not as big of a yard to take care of and will probably just leave this ole mower in the shed when I leave.
