What kind of nails for manual or nail gun? I don't have a pneumatic nail gun, although I might could buy one because I have plenty of soffit to put up, and if I did, which one would I buy? It's likely to be a manual job, so if it is, do I predrill holes?

Hardie is more impervious to weather, but LP is way easier to work with, especially for sofit. If you're gonna be in your house forever, go with the former, but if not, the latter is good for at least 15-20 years, no problem, maybe more (even though LP claims longer).

Get a this and some and .113 diameter collated framing nails. Flush or slightly recess the nail head, and fill the dimple with caulk and paint...

Both, as I should be.
I have also installed the old LP products (along with many other siding products), to their installation instructions, and it did not help it at all in Florida. When LP can show it's "new" engineered wood siding will withstand 20+ years in humid Florida, when properly installed and 8" above the ground, without coming apart, I will be a believer.....until then, cement board siding will be superior in humid environments.

Sure you do. You have knowledge of all products and proper installation procedures........right. They tried to stop the use of OSB in your state because of the roof failures during high winds of a storm.
our company went down and inspected claims on this and found that the shoddy nailing of the sheeting was the biggest culprit. Those cowboys that shoot nails in with a gun missing the truss.

-Ed Keith, senior engineer with APA was there from the beginning too. He was part of Florida’s official damage assessment team and claims, “The problems with roof sheathing were related to the fact that builders were not building correctly, and the inspectors were not inspecting adequately.” Keith insists that APA’s quality assurance testing of osb and plywood is reliable and as result, builders get durable roof sheathing. Panel manufacturers must submit to random testing to earn an APA grade stamp. APA-stamped osb and plywood are tested for bending strength, stiffness, shear strength, and concentrated load performance. APA tests glue bonds with an accelerated weathering wet/dry cycle tests to assure durability and measures fastener holding capability. The APA tests outlined in PS2/PRP 108 are product performance standards and they predict that osb and plywood perform as equals for their intended end use. This begs the question: Why did Mitrani and others see so much failed osb during inspections? Proponents of osb say it’s simple. Most homes were built with osb and the installation was poor. When I did inspections after Andrew, I literally saw panels with only 4 nails in the corners of the panels and roof framing members with no holes in them indicating that the sheathing had never been nailed off or that sheathing nails had completely missed the roof framing targets.” says Keith. He claims the overall consensus among experts who have looked at roof-sheathing failures report that failures resulting from hurricane Andrew were related to “workmanship and improper fastening” not the use of osb. -

Warranty information on the smart siding. Read up on it. Lp are currently retrofitting old OSB and LVL plants to produce Smart Siding to keep up with the demand. Remember the vynal siding that was to last forever////

Not saying it is the perfect product but like all products, you have to maintain it.

Get a Coiled siding gun. No need to pre drill just make sure you set the depth so your not countersinking and have a small gap. I like Hardie but hell LP does the job too if installed properly.

Flashing is a must on all seams. I also like to double house wrap on the weather side of the structures. I use a 4 1/2 diamond concrete blade for the majority of my cuts.. DON'T buy those siding blades they suck ass.. Get yourself a set of Gecko siding installation tool too!!!!

66Galaxie I hope you don't mind me asking a similar question.

I am currently waiting on 30sq of polar wall to replace my beveled cedar board. I also need to replace the (5/4) 1x8 cedar facia also. Do any of you know a source for brown composite 1x8 that I can get for the facia. I looked thru Hardie and didn't see it. Local lumber yard only has a white plastic I would have to paint.

Thanks
Tom
