Gun 3- I fell in love with this one. Loved everything about this.
Remington 700 SPS Tactical Magpul
20" barrel
.308
Leupold Vortex HS scope
Folding bipod

$1652.19

I've heard Remington isn't what it used to be? Say it isn't so! I was ready to buy this now!

4th gun- the one my grandson wanted. It's off the table due to ammo price but I'll throw it up anyway.
Savage 111 Long Range Hunter
Accutrigger
Vortex PST scope
Folding bipod
.338 Lapua Magnum
That's one long rifle!

What's that tell you when store has no ammo for this beast. Sales guy said plan on throwing 5 dollar bills out the barrel. Reloading is a must from the get-go.
$2239.97

That Remington will shoot to 1250 with good hand loads. Ask me how I know. The problem with 308 is wind. It's shit in light breeze.

260/6.5 creedmore are superior to 308 for long range target shooting or even deer hunting. There are projectiles up to 143 grains which have high bullet coefficient and seem to cut wind better.

Hand loads run about 60 cents each, once you own brass. For long range accuracy, hand loads are key. Get him a rcbs rock chucker, a Redding deluxe die set, and some lapua brass(good brass at a decent price) and let him make his own. He will appreciate it more.

As far as what gun I would buy him? Prob the Remington, but that's because he can rebarrel it down the road and have better optic to begin with. A good barrel is 300-350, plus gun smith money(figure 300-500). The trigger in them isn't too terrible, but a timney is a suggestion I would make.

If long range shooting is the goal, I would maybe look past the short 20" barrel options. All other things equal you're giving up velocity in those short tubes, which out at long range equates to more drop. Especially when you're running factory loads, another 4 or 6 inches of barrel is free velocity.

for that kinds money, you can order in a Savage Custom Shop rifle. They are much different that the LRPH or the LRPV. All are single shot bolt actions that are solid topped with right port left bolt or the opposite. The action is 2.2 times stiffer! The barrels are select. The trigger is a target unit. The action uses three bedding screws. They come with proof targets. Seen two of them. One in 6BR and the other in 22-250. The 6BR came with a .180" group using off the shelf ammo. The 22-250 shot a tic over .200" with factory 55 grain Federal ammo. At $1750, they were a steal. You can get them in all sorts of rounds, but one in 6.5-284 or .308 National Match would put you right there.

All my 700s already wear Manners or McMillan stocks. Gives me a reason to buy an SPS Tactical and ditch the Hogue stock. I haven't bought any new rifles in a few years because I can't leave them alone. I can spend $2500 on a $500 rifle in about three days....

That's me & cars! I should have 80k in my 50k 34 Ford soon. ;) I see this transferring to guns soon.
the one serious advantage the 700 has over the other guns is aftermarket stocks. The McMillan Edge and one out of N. Carolina (name escapes me). Rest are just stocks. There are good stocks out there for others, but not as good as the other two. Shooting very long range; your shooting off a rest ( forget bi-pods), and you want a stock designed for this.

Haha, I am the same way. I stopped racing cars and started shooting competitively thinking it might be cheaper.. I have spent more on rifles/optics in the last year than some people make in a year. Its scary addicting.

I'm now looking at the Ruger Precision. Need to put my hands on one. Turners Outdoors shows one online chambered .243 for $1094.00 (MSRP $1399.00) Need to see what else they have. We have 3 stores within 30 miles. We also have a gun show coming up Feb 13 & 14th so I might wait until then.

Where did you order from? The Ruger Precision in 6.5 Creedmoor is on my "to do" list after finding something for the wife.

A local gun shop where I have bought from before several times .He already has a couple ordered for other people . He never seems to get greedy on the markup price .Search around I would bet you can find it for a similar price local to you .If not message me .

I would run a .243, they are a solid long range target round. Hornady makes a decent match ammo for them as well. I have been out to 1574 yards with my 6xc(.243 bullet). Only downside is that barrel life is a little worse than a 6.5 creedmoor.
