I'm wanting to use a 3.00 gear but can only find it in 28 spline pinion. The car weighs 3300 with me. Ls turbo made 1200rwhp with a t56. I've been 1.29 60ft 5.6s at 130mph with the t56. Has a th400 in it now. I'm worried ill just brake the pinion. Should I try it or just put a 3.25 in it or a 4.30 with 2nd gear leave. I'm wanting to go low 5s and still drive it.

When I first put a 9" under my C4 (2014) I had a 3.89 ratio 28 spline small pinion Motive street gear in it. Setup in a Yukon aluminum thrubolt case. Car weighed 3150lbs, 1.80 Powerglide. SBC on nitrous. Ran 1.20-1.23 60ft on 28x10.5s and 5.30s 127mph in the 1/8th.

That little street gear lasted a year with 28s and then the second year I switched to the 275 Pro Radial.... same 60fts but half a season later it was howling like mad. It lasted the rest of the season without catastrophic failure but the drive face on the ring gear was cratered. The pinion never twisted or anything..... I would not worry about the pinion shaft but the hard ass gear will eat itself with that kind of power and weight.

I now run a big pinion Pro Gear but also made the switch to a 1.69 Powerglide and 4.29 rear ratio. Its been in there since 2017.... Of course the car has also gotten considerably faster over the years. It's running 1.15 60s like clockwork now....

If you're just going to 1/8 mile race a 1.48 second gear leave TH400 and 4.30 rear would work well. The similar gear swap made my car faster and more manageable... but it'd be miserable for any real street driving. Tough choices.

I am using an AODE with a first gear ratio of 2.84 and 30" tall M/T radial tires. Car has been 5.06 to the 1/8th and 7.96 in the 1/4. Best 60ft has been 1.20x and usually the car is set up to run 1.25 or harder during competition. Car does fine with that starting line ratio leaving at 3800rpm/8psi boost.

My car weighs 3550 lbs and has clocked hundreds of low 8's. I've been running 28 spline pinions in my car for 13 years. I used a 3.25 gear for many of those years but in the last few years have switched to a 3.50 gear that is easier on my planetaries. I did break one pinion shaft but that was on a 3.25 gear that came out of a 1980s Ford van with unknown history had I put a lot of runs on it before it broke. I limit the number of runs to 200 or so depending on how hard it's been used since I do a lot of test runs with only 1.3x short times. I keep track of the data from every run so that helps.
