Bigger is not always better ?
15 inch wide rims -- go with 15 wide slicks or 17 wide ?
Shear and friction experts can you help me get the right compound for this combo ?
I can fit 33.5 tall.
I know your suppose to use the minimum size that will get the job done but when you know the track you race at can suck at times is it better to put on the biggest tire you can? Will a 15 inch slick work better on a 15 inch rim because its allowing the tire to stay round compared to a 17 slick on a 15 rim the edges may not be flat only on the hit.
Does the 15 wide slick work better then the 17 when you don't have 16 wide rims ?

Then there is the choice of compounds and brands MT or Hoosiers, Hoosier now being run by Continental so is there any reason not to use their slicks.

Car is 3600 with driver and will be used for bracket racing .
1000hp 4.10 gear 5800 stall , 4 link, da shocks on 4 corners.
Used on a track with limited track prep.

Hoosier coming out with this new part number - 18372 Thinking about trying it...
Item # Tire Size Tread Width Approx. Dia. Approx. Circ. Measured Rim Section Width Compound Weight
18372 33.0/15.0-15S 15.0" 33.0" 104.0" 15x15 18.5" DO6 38 lbs.

Hoosier has added the new 33.0/15.0-15S stiff sidewall tire to its already impressive line-up of drag racing slicks. This new tire is designed for the Super Gas, bracket and heads up racer who is looking for the latest performance gains of quicker reactions, quicker 60fts and great handling on the track.

Thanks for replying classracer ...

I agree, but I am cant afford to go out and buy the nice 16 wide Weld double bead locks to run the 17's.
I am limited to the rims I have, just looking to dead hook the tires every time. I should be ok as long as I put the right slick on this 15 inch rims... I was told by Hoosier that the 15 inch slick may work better than the 17 wide so I was trying to back this up from people who have had 17' on 15 wide rims and then switched to 15 wide slicks and went faster and still hooked ... There is wisdom in a counsel of many. so I am all ears.

What Bickel says points to running a 15 wide slick if you only have a 15 inch rim ...so if that is true then its a matter of shear which come down to rubber compounds. But whats on paper does not always work best... so I am hoping people are willing to share their expedience...even with brands.

This is a good read about slicks
