No such spacer in my 9", looks like someones idea to shim axle end play if the bearing is narrower than its pocket on the tube. At least it is too thick if the retainer gets bend. Leave it out and test how the axle sits in.

 

I did and it looks like it would sit fine and the retainer may not get as bent.

Looks like some pretty good Hackfuckery going on there with that backing plate! I was trying to figure what those backing plates are from. wonder if they got the wrong set-out on the axle (most Fords 2 1/2", GM 2 3/4") & the drum was locking up when the wheel was tightened down? A 1/4" spacer there was a better idea to them than a wheel spacer between the axle flange & drum to fix the problem? You may find out when you go to put it back together. Just a Thought, Lorne

 

Yeah it was backing plates for a different housing end that had the holes elongated. Looking to get that stuff off and move to a disc setup but first wanted to see what the heck was with this spacer.

Yep this is the one I sent you the pm about the spool and whatnot.

I set the axles in with no spacer and it appears to fit a lot better. I am not sure why they were in there. I will be changing axles anyways since I will be moving to your 35 spline spool.

I am thinking over the winter I will just move to the spool, change the axles, and then install a willwood drag disc kit. This should get the rear in proper order.

For reference the drums fit fine with the spacer removed also. I am not sure what brakes were on it before I got the rearend.

Who built that rear to begin with?

 

Started life as a moser is my understanding. I bought it second hand. I have rebuilt it twice but I never noticed the spacers before. Not sure how I missed them but I did.

I've got it all together now and waiting on brakes now. Everything seems to fit better without those spacers.

The spacer is so the same axles will work in LT1 and LS1 cars. The brake spacing is different

The spacer makes up for the thickness of the backing plate for the brakes. If you use an aftermarket race type disc brake system then the spacer is not needed. I have seen them before with stock type brakes are used on a 9 inch.
