Hi, I see at tracks that some crews install fan towards engine. Some say they try to keep bottom engine cool and top end they are not to concerned. Anyways let me hear your thoughts on whats the purpose of it.

Is it to keep top end or bottom end cool or any other reasons.

Thanks

I do it because I want to get it cool fast. Never know how long you really have between rounds. I already have the gen started and the battery charging. I leave the circulation pump on too.

I run the fan, wp for about 10 mins and I get coolant down to below 100. This was with my old 355, That decided to let loose at last index race. I have a new little m being built so I know that holds a bit more coolant so we shall see. I just didn't like the coolant staying that hot for so long.

I have a routine, plug up charger, leave water pump and fan running. Go in the trailer, light a smoke, enter the weather data on my ticket, remove the front end, turn off fan and put two 110v high volume fans on block and on radiator, leave the water pump running, then sit down.
Ten minutes later (or when the heads are below 100 by laser tester) I shut down all fans and water pumps, fuel the car and put the nose back on.
No wonder I am so tired when I go rounds

You guys are working way too hard at this. Dam, if racing took that much effort I would have given up long ago. How is this for between rds. I get out of car , add fuel, look at time ticket, decide on dial for next rd. . Cool trans? Nope If its under 250* its ok. Cool engine? Nope its on alcohol. Charge battery? Nope I run an alternator. Its pretty easy really

I see guys warming up their cars on hot days and just shake my head. I normally drive my car to the staging lanes from the pit, turning on only the water pump till the temp gauge starts registering, around 120. I then turn the fan on and aim to keep temp between 120-140 till I hit the burn out box. Then I keep both fan and water pump on till end of run and temp is back down to at least 140, which takes no time. On cooler days I just let it run a little bit longer, but my motor never see' s more than 160-180 on even the hottest days.

Shake your head all you want. No matter how hot it was out my car would always have a slow pass off of the trailer and then start picking up. Watched a lot of other cars having the same problem, then watched the ones that didn't. I warm my car up no matter how hot, including a long drive around with the fan off and a couple of launches. Then I park it with the fan and water pump OFF, and let it heat sink while I fill out my tech card. I'll cool it down after a good heat soak until the temp gauge is down to the peg. Always using a battery charger while cooling even though I run an alt. The car will print time slips after that, the first time trial is within thousanths of the next few passes.
I started using a charger between rounds even with an alt as while it's cooling it's pulling the batt down and then on startup alt is trying to build batt up, can effect alt load differently every pass.

Knew a guy that would ice the trans cooler, which was mounted horizontally and would also spray the converter with ice'd water out of a "pump sprayer"... He did this religeously between winning rounds.

Got a Moroso heat pad on the oil pan used before time trials...it would never build any oil temp without it. Keep water temp around 140 and rarely use the squirrel cage fan unless it is unusually hot outside. Chunk gets a spin on jackstands on arrival unless facility has long return roads.
