i have a comp belt drive for a BBC, standard cam location. its a 6200. I replaced the belt. it is real tight. It is hard to turn the engine either direction in the slightest amount. removing the idler allows it to rotate normally. has anyone had issues like this? i attempted to find a smaller diameter idler with no luck. it is the 81 tooth belt. the prior belt wasnt this tight.

With belt drives, the "same" belts are not always the same. Jesel used to qualify their belts from the supplier and they would provide slightly longer or shorter belts upon request. Maybe this is what OP has run into, I never worked with the Comp stuff.

Jesel belts were always fairly tight and certainly put a bit of load on the front bearing upper shell and cam bearing when the engine was not running. You could see the witness marks from that, but it never caused an issue.

Used a lot of Jesel drives, but I'm a gear drive fan personally.

thanks for the replies guys, i called comp cams and was told there were no other idlers made with different diameters for the 6200 bbc. they have some listed for the small block but all are larger in diameter. i was told to try another belt. im stress testing it, to either stretch the belt or burn a cam bearing. after 4 more runs nothing happened.
