What is it powering?

 

The ACERT engine program was the reason Caterpillar left the class 8 Diesel engine market…

 

The C7’s we had were a nightmare. We dumped them 5 years before planned. Had 10 in the fleet. Emissions were horrible.

 

What is the serial #? If you don't know that what year of truck is it in? The 2007 model year, serial number prefix LEE are to be avoided. The ACERT engines prior to 2007 were decent, twin-turbo engines. If it's been 380hp all it's life, that to me is a good sign, less fuel/less heat/etc. Depending on what it's in and how you're planning to use it, it is a decent 13L engine. Don't buy it and expect to run with 15L engines pulling a 5% grade @ 80k# though.

 

We have a couple 380hp c-13’s at work. Good and trouble free in our application but their laggy acceleration is the worst thing.

 

i had a C13 470 HP in a 2005 kenworth.
good engine, but at 275k miles it started using coolant. like a gallon every 5000 miles.
other than that, no issues. we sold it at 300,000 miles

 

I drove one also a 470 for a couple of years. It was trouble free but it is not that mountain friendly that’s for sure. If I was going to get a cat it would be my favourite of all time 6NZ C15.

 

These had thrust bearing issues with the ZF and the regen/DPF system was a joke.

 

Some seem confused here. ACERT technology started in 2004. The 2007 EPA Mandate started the DPF style of aftertreatment which was problematic.

 

Both were problematic.

 

Go ahead and get a 6nz cat c15. You will not regret it.

 

No personal experience but I found a YouTube channel a while back that is perfect for this kind of discussion.

 

Delete it and most of your problems go away. ANY used diesel truck with the emission stuff still on it is a nightmare
