Even pressure washing wouldn't get the scum off of this car that had been sitting under a tree for probably a couple of years. What is the best way to get it off? Is there a cleaner that will cut through it?

I had the same thing on a truck I bought. The best thing was keeping it wet so it soaked for a while. Then I used one of those fishnet sponges designed for tires. I can't remember what soap I used but it was regular car wash stuff. I'd be afraid Awesome or Simple Green would remove the paint also. It would have to be pretty clean already to use a clay bar. That is like the step before buffing. I've used Dawn to strip one that had crap on it also.

Awsome will work but your gonna need a car wash brush or a good old towel and fill
a bucket up with some hot water with Dish detergent. Spray down the entire car with the Awsome and let it soak for a bit, then respray an area and start washing their I usually start on the roof work way down. Afterwards it might look a bit dull but some wax or polish will bring up the shine.
Hell I have used bleach a couple of times on cars that had mold growing get it clean.

I would wash it once with dawn (as already mentioned), then dry it. Next get a good clay bar kit, and take your time going over every inch of each panel. Then if you are good with an orbital buffer, wax and buff the vehicle. If you are not, find a place close to you that will do this and do it right.

I think it's a mixture of all three probably and on black paint. It's the Jeep we gave my daughter's boyfriend. He even tried pressure washing it and it didn't work. It looks like the paint underneath is good if he can get the gunk off. I'm sad he's having a hard time with it. He started it and it ran, but has a misfire on one cylinder. He said it needed new plugs and wires and obviously, the guy that owned it knew it, because there were new plugs and wires in the back seat. There are a few other issues going on, but hopefully they are gonna work out fine.

Might have to buff it with a power buffer and some compound. Any body/detail shop will take care of that for you Dee.

I realize I'm gonna be flamed for this...

I have removed decals (3M) and glue residue and sap
from vehicles many times. I've tried a lot of tricks.

The one that works best for me is diesel fuel. It will
remove the sap, tar & other stuff without hurting the
paint.

The trick of course is don't let it soak for more than
a few minuets, then wash with a very soapy rinse like
dawn dish soap.

Has worked well for me over the years.
