ATV guys... what size 4 wheeler for a 13 year old?

Looking to pick up a couple of ATV's - one for my fat ass, one for my son. He's 13, 6' and about 125 lbs (not slight, just no fat, lol). He has a little Chinese 90cc ATV now and it's about done, lol.

I was looking at the Kymco Mongoose 270 for him and either that or the MXU 270 for me. Planning on mostly trail riding, not planning on any serious mudding if any at all.

Like to keep it around $4000 or under each... can't tell if the Kymco is a decent beginners ATV or if he is / I am going to be disappointed in a month. I'd rather go through a dealer for the financing and new for the warranty, but I'm thinking in my budget range I'm really limiting my options on ATVs.

Option 2 is picking up a couple of dirt bikes.... but where I am there seems to be more places to ride ATVs than dirt bikes.

Any input?

Get him a Honda 400ex. Air cooled runs forever and not too much power. That is what I got my 10 yo for his second quad. First quad was a 90 raptor. My older son has a 400z. Stay away from every company but the big 4. My 12yo weighs 90 pounds he rides the Honda with no issues. Best thing about the Honda is it is light, if the thing lands on him he will get bumps and bruises but he will get up.

Dont buy a Chinese pos. You will regret it later when you have to wrench on it just to start riding. For $4000 you could buy a nice honda that will last a long time. If he is that big he will outgrow the smaller bikes really fast. He should be able to handle atleast a 300 honda without killing himself and keep up with everyone else.
All three of my boys started on a 300 honda. My 9 year old will ride my 750 brute force like he stole it.

Buy a used Honda, Kalasaki or Yamaha for the boy....... He will outgrow it very fast and you can sell it for almost what you paid for it.
I highly suggest you check Parts availability for any of those Chinese brands you are thinking of.

BTW! As far as you go..... Honda’s are the best and a Yamaha Grizzley is a great Machine for the money.

If you go to a Polaris dealer in texas to buy any 90cc atv and tell them its for a 6 year old they aren't supposed to sell it to you. I found out the hard way when they refused to sell me one. Yes, they said they couldn't sell it to me due to liability issues. It had a sticker that said no one under 10.
I went up the street and bought another brand.

lol. I started on a Yamaha Tri-Zinger shortly before my 2nd birthday, graduated to a 185s by 5, then a 250sx by 8-9 and rode dad's built 250R 10-16. Every kid is different in what they can handle, 90% of which is having a proper respect for it.

I got my 8 & 3 yo one of the knock-off mini RzR's. Done many small upgrades to it, but they enjoy the heck out of it and them having harnesses and a cage makes me worry a bit less about them. - Some of the China machines are decent enough for what you pay, just do your research on them. As for the mini RzR's, the Polaris one is actually the same Chinese machine as some others, but has less features at twice the cost.

Kymco has actually been around for several years now and is a decently rated machine for the $. As with most brands, maintenance is the biggest difference between a good and bad experience.

I take it you haven't been around a Can-Am Renegade or Outlander? - The 800 Renegade 4wd is the reason most of the race organizations have put the 4wd's in the separate class; the sports can't keep up. Got even worse with the 1000 and now the 1000R.

Way more fun on my big heavy 4wd than I ever had on a sport quad.

IMO it depends on the type of riding you'll do. I have a rancher for the woods, hunting and around the house. I also have a TRX300 for busting ass and open areas. For his size I'd look at 300's and up, most bikes you can control the speed.

For the guys saying the dealer has to ask for age, I just purchased two at the same time and wasn't asked anything about who was going to ride them. Is this a state thing?

I would stay from anything but the big 4! I put both of my boys on Yamaha BLASTER 200cc 2 strokes. They were 10 and 12 at the time and we lived in northern Nevada. We have been on bikes a lot also since then but I am back on SPORT QUADS and 1 YZ 250. We have a Yamaha Raptor 250 (Wife’s) Raptor 350 (spare) and a Raptor 700R for me. The Blaster and the Raptor 250 are great because they are smaller framed and fit small bodies up to 6’ pretty well.
We have had a lot of GREAT TIMES over the last 15 years and keep on riding, just out 2 weeeks in Childress Texas!

I've bought my Recon new in 2001. Great machine and fun. I rode a neighbors 2 older 250 cc (Kawi or Yami?) before I bought mine one, was 4wd and one was 2wd. The 4wd was geared low and not fun. The 2wd you could slide sideways and had good top speed.

I had a banshee at 12 and 90#’s, sooooo if he can ride, that will do nicely. A 250r before that that was built was a better ride but slower.

Later in life i got a trx 450r and it was nuts, cams, head work, titanium yoshimira exhaust, long travel up front(seriously needed a 4-6” swing arm badly) and it had so much torque that i couldnt be on the gas and steer it. I hated it, sold it and got a banshee again and built it a little, but dold that and bought a land cruiser. Ha!

People keep mentioning things like a 300ex and 400ex. This is ignorant for a 13 year old. People riding machines above their capabilities is normal and it's how people get ruined on riding. A machine of appropriate size is way more fun, because you can actually push the machine to its limits, and it's safer. 98% of 13 year olds can't ride a 300ex to its capabilities. Get the right size and upgrade as needed.

My 13 year old daughter has a Raptor 125 and it's just about right for her.
