Ive got a 95 Dodge with the 12 V cummins, auto trans. I pretty much only use it to tow my 24ft enclised trailer which weighs about 8,000lbs loaded. It has the 3.54 gears in the rears and I have been tossing around the idea of changing to 4.10's. Id like to know if the gear swap will change my fuel milage. I like the milage I get now about 17mpg towing the trailer and with fuel prices Id like to stay close to that as possible. Im thinking in one way the gears will help with fuel milage in stop and go light to light but will loose it cruising on the highway. Id say im 60/40 more highway towing. Is it not worth the time and money to change?

I already have 285/75/17's on it now, cant go any taller without lifting and im not into that stuff. I really would like it to pull from a stop a little easier and get up to speed. Im only turning 1250 rpm at 50 mph, 1500 at 60 and 1750 at 65. The truck really falls on its face at 70 and fuel milage starts to drop so I dont want to be turning over 2,000 rpm at 60. Does anyone have a truck like mine with 4.10's that can give me an idea of your rpm range?

If your trying to increase your effective gearing to raise your RPM's and improve your top end power, then why don't you go to a shorter tire? You have a tall tire with tall gears, not a good combo for towing.

I have a 98.5 3500 Dually 2wd 24 valve Auto with 4.10's 225-75-16 tire its turning about 2200 @ 70. last time I checked I got 21 mpg on the Hwy empty, towing 8500 lbs 09-14 mpg depending on terrain, head wind and how bad I want to get where I'm going ect.... Geno's garage has a lot of good Cummings information on there website
