Got my eye on a high mileage 5.3L Sierra. The owner has paperwork for a rebuilt trans from a year ago. The motor has 189k miles. I’m familiar with the 99-06 Silerado/Sierra’s, which ran forever. However I’m not familiar with this generation. What should I look out for?

GM's DOD began with the 2005 Chevrolet Blazer with the 5.3 option. First year (I believe) for pickups was the new body style 1/2 ton pickups introduced later in midyear 2007. And beginning with the new body style 2014 Silverado 1500, the 5.3 does indeed have the new direct-injection EcoTec3 engine. We've had a bunch of them and yes, they still have DOD issues as the miles roll up. Be thankful if you catch the problem before it destroys the cam.

OP sez 189K miles....that's getting up there but who can say. We've seen the DOD fail at that level; another (my driver for quite some time) went 330K before it shit the DOD bed sitting at a stoplight....and that truck was meticulously maintained its whole life.

If you get this truck and plan on keeping it longterm, consider a DOD delete.

2014??

You're likely getting a Mexican made truck. Check the VIN to be sure it starts with a 1 and not a 3.

3 = Silao Mexico made since ~2011
. I’m familiar with the 99-06 Silerado/Sierra’s, which ran forever.
Really?? I use to think that too
Don't believe the hype.

I'm on my 3rd 5.3L engine in a 00-06 Tahoe. Both predecessor engines failed @ ~125,000 miles which kinda blew my mind.

First was an oil pickup O ring that failed and engine stopped getting oil.

Second got a yard pull from LKQ @100K and it made it to ~125k and cracked a block in winter, shop manager brother was using it.

That forced me to buy a new Reman.
At that point I replaced EVERYTHING in the bay.

number one issue is lifter failure. put a towing camshaft in it with ls7 lifters and the DOD delete kit and it will run for 300,000. My dad has had a couple of them and the current one is at about 240,000 miles. when it was apart we did oil pump and timing set just for peace of mind.

We’re starting to see a lot of them for transmissions. 100-200k is miles. We put billet cover converters in them all, almost everything trans go makes, turn lockup off in the earlier gears, turn DOD off, target 0 slip, and it’s one of the lowest percentage of comebacks we get.

Couldn’t tell you how many have shown up 3 quarts low on oil and making trash oil pressure, that don’t make a fucking noise. Lol. LS > all

303000 on my 5.3 ls based with dod before I lost a dod lifter. New transmission at 275000. Threw a new set of lifters in it and disabled dod so that they never change states again and off we go. Been a great truck!

I love them. one time thought id try a ford and on the test drive it just felt like a real pos. Just disable the v4 crap. i took mine to a tuner. we did have one at work that had a trans issue. you go to pass somebody and it would lose all power then slam into gear and sound like the rear end was about to come though the floor

I’ve had my 2013 5.3 for a while now, 110k, no issues at all really except normal maintenance, interior door handle broke but I got a good fix on it. 3rd brake light was leaking, some rust on rear 1/4s.
Was towing a trailer w it for a while. Had DOD tuned out years ago.
Cleans up real nice, I have the XLT
Even the leather is holding up real well.

Only thing is the lifters you have to watch out for because of the DOD bullshot. Get a dod delete or a tune
It's been over a year and a half since this original post was made,...I'm pretty sure NAeg6 isn't still looking at that truck....lol

Have used ROTELLA T6 in all my LS engines with DOD or not....never have had any problems with any of them....pickup tube o ring on oil pump is a problem....wonder how many cam and lifter failures are due to air in lubrication system caused by that not being replaced at first sign of it going bad.

BRAKE LINES! Last night in fact, just sold my sons 07 GMC HD2500 classic work truck to a buddy as it had a blown line and we left it sit were it was parked for about a year. Didn't need the truck anymore. Buddy brings his brothers duramax Chevy, loaded it up and we get down the gravel road and he then says "I cant stop as we rolled out onto the county highway". I told him about 500 ft before we hit the main road , hey you better check those brakes and check that brake controller. That SOB Chevy blew the same brake line as the GMC and pedal went to the floor. Luckily, there was no one coming as we rolled out. Thought he shit his pants. We worked and used the trailer brake controller override to get it off the county highway and back to my shop. loaded the trailer on back of the FORD and hauled it to his house. Going back today to trailer the Chevy back. Truck passed inspection a week ago. I don't know if its the manufactures or the bastards that lay the salt juice down, but something need to be rendered about the bottoms of the cars and trucks rotting from it.

Had a 2011 I bought new and I killed it this past fall with a Semi incident while towing. It was a 5.3 with a 6 spd trans. Never a problem, never leaked a drip and was maintained correctly. Had I not killed it I'd have driven it until I died. It had just clicked 80k miles a few days before I wrecked it. Truck was immaculate. Better truck by far than the 2024 I replaced it with. The 2024 is basically Mary Barra's rendition of pzazzzz. Worse mileage than the 2011. WTF?
