Would you rather the quality and or amount of work you do,be used as a measurement to determine how valuable you are or whether you should be promoted?
The reason I ask is my immediate boss/good friend and I have this ongoing discussion/argument about this. He chooses to kiss ass. I say fuck that, do a good job and you'll be more valuable than someone with soft lips and a beard.

I'm the only one who works in my department on my shift. No bosses around, so asskissing will get me nowhere. I just do my job, and avoid any contact with my bosses to be honest. Its worked pretty well for the last 3 years, so I cant complain.

I do the best I can and sleep well at night knowing that if I die in my sleep I have nothing to regret. But just like others have said, you have to have some diplomacy, the best worker in the world eventually becomes too much to deal with if he's a total fucking asshole. You don't have to swing on someones nuts or kiss their ass, but being easy to work with makes everyones life easier goes a long way, especially when you do a good job.

Some of the people I work with always tell me, you gotta learn to play the game.

I don't pull any punches, don't kiss ass, and don't bullshit. I do my job, and make suggestions on ways to improve the business. Then after I leave to go somewhere else and the powers that be actually listen to my input, I laugh when the company I left that didn't goes in the shitter.

Has already happened once and probably will again here before too long. Seems some companies have absolutely nothing but the bottom line in their sights. How many times do you have to beat it into their heads that excellent customer service, and going out of your way to help people will take you much farther than trying to make 200% profit on everything.

Kinda nice to be in a "nitch" market sometimes.

It seems about every five years you get a shift in management. The boss that thought you were the best thing going is replaced by a boss who thinks you totally suck and they try and make your life miserable. If you can stick it out they are gone in about five years and guess what you are back on top. As so on and so on.

Same here, 5 years seems to be the number. Fortunately I've always got a future employer lined up, by then.
