I hate to ask this, but don't you need the stud longer that the nut? I kind of remember a track telling me that to pass tech.

Hope I'm wrong.

It has nothing to do with the nut.
It must protrude the width of the stud.
So my 5/8" stud must be 5/8" out of the hole.

Like you, I like having a few threads of the stud out past the end of the nut. It's a very quick way for the tech guy to see if the car meets the rule. Never hurts to use all the threads of the lug nut, imho.

I wondered WTF... is that a spacer on the outside of the wheel... clever way of attaching the caps!

The shanked lug nuts are pretty thin wall when you have 1/2" studs and if the stud isn't out past the thickness of the wheel the hex head can break off from the shank.
