A stutter box is basically a rev limiter set up to come on at the middle or top end of the track. They were used to control et's, but are now illegal. Check the NRHA's rule book.
I always thought it was the delay box or whatever you call it. That lets you hold your launch RPM's 'til you let off the T brake. You know how the cars with electronics are staged and sound like they have a bad mis(hence the name "stutter box"). Until the light turns green. I really dont know what it is either. Im a street car guy. lol
:smt039yes it was a serious question. with all the electronics out there that are available for cars, rev limiters, programmable ignitions, 1-2-3 steps, etc. . When i heard the term stutter box, I kinda went What is that? what is it used for ? I am not use to all these new gadgets on race cars now days. The last time I drag raced was back in 1980; when turbo cars were laughed at and nitrous was just really becoming popular to use. Times have changed :smt023
Basically it's using a rev limiter set at a lower rpm to slow the car down near the top end of the track to affect your ET. Although "stutter boxes" are classified as illegal, using a throttle stop at the top end isn't and will do the same thing. The throttle stop is just a lot easier on the engine.
Maybe the sanction bodies feel using a lower rpm rev limiter at high speed has a better chance of blowing up an engine.
