Looking for some recommendations for my dad's 414 SBC. This will be pretty much race only going in a 3350lb Nova. Goal is high 9's on motor and we will probably throw a 150 shot on it.

Let me apologize right off the bat for not having 100% of the details on the motor. My dad just picked it up and the machine shop is going through it as I'm writing this. The cam is a small base circle solid roller that makes low .700's on both sides. The rest of the combo is a LittleM (4.125 x 3.875), H-Beams and a domed JE piston the previous owner said made 14:1 on his old combo. The valve pockets are for 23 degree heads and not looking to change pistons.

We have about $5000 to spend on heads, lifters, and shaft rockers. I'm not extremely familiar with SBC stuff...was looking a AFR 245's and similar. Would they get us there? Seem to be in the price range.

Thanks for your time!

You should find out exactly what you have for pistons.Afr 245 has valve location moved.Look at bes dart 230 program.Look at profiler 176x heads etc.We have a set of those on nephew's 416 inch eng.He runs 5.90s in 1/8 th in 3000 ft da.

Better question is what kinda rpm do you want to turn it.
My 412 sbc (4.165 x 3.800) in my 3250 lb Nova runs 9.90's in 2000 ft AA with a 4.10 rear gear and a power glide, full 3.5" exhaust. It has AFR 235 heads on it, .700 lift cam, super Vic intake and a 1000+ 4150 carb.
I turn it 7800-8000 rpm.

You ever dyno that engine,? Heads untouched from afr?
Heads are untouched from AFR. Never dyno'd it.
It has went 9.70 @ 138 mph with the exhaust off in reasonably good air..
More gear would help as well as a 3 spd trans, but it's a bracket car and deadly consistent.
I did run that engine in my beretta for a bit, it weighed 2160 lbs and went 8.30 @ 165 mph 1.160 in 60'
I've also run it on pump gas and it really didn't slow up, I mix it 50/50 pump and race gas just to be safe.
It has 12.25:1 true measure compression.

That's a nice setup for sure!

What do you have on it for rockers? A friend of mine bought a motor with those heads on it, and we had to go to T&D shaft rockers to get acceptable valvetrain geometry. Maybe we're just picky.

I appreciate the feedback.

We would be ok with an 8000rpm shift +/- a few hundred if there is power up there.

The car has a TH400 and 5000 stall behind his old 406 (AFR 210's - 10:1 pump gas and .600 lift cam). The new 414 combo came with a glide (turbo splined) and a PTC 4500 (on motor) converter. Plan was to use one of these converters behind the TH400 and sell the glide.

The piston don't have a job number on them - just a casting number. How do we figure out what they are? And what would we need to know?

They started life is a 4.125 bore piston (which measure about 4.120) and .927 pin which is into the oil ring land and use support rails. From memory they have 622R & 622L cast into the bottom.

Looking for a proven head that is gonna hit our goals. I haven't heard of Chad Spier (no disrespect). Will his heads get it done? Wallace says we need 685'ish to the crank to get into the 9's on motor.

The car is back halfed and hooks hard. More worried about wheelies than traction.

Already has Holly Dominator EFI and a 1000cfm throttle body, crank trigger, Switching to LS Coils on plug, etc.
