Wife mentioned a cruise. I've been before, she hasn't. I had a great time but I drink and she doesn't.. Bahama's? Caribbean? Would leave port somewhere between Charleston and Miami depending on destination and prices.. What say you? Probably look at at 5 day since I'll have near $800 bucks in boarding our dogs while we are gone...

Cruise ships are a very cheep way of traveling to different destinations. I work on the propulsion system on these ships and I'm not a huge fan. Thats mostly because I spend lots of time aboard these ships. In fact I'm posting this from NCL Star off the coast of Australia fixing this turd. Some people absolutely love taking a cruise and enjoying what they have to offer. I meet lots of people that take one cruise a month. (retired)
The bad

They herd you like cats and you don't have much time in each destination to really explore. If you want the flying shits that is the perfect place to be. Iv'e never been onboard one where I didn't have the shits aleast one day. Most of the Caribbean destinations are shit holes outside of the beaten path.
Most cruise lines don't do engine room tours anymore. You would enjoy that more than the rest of the ship.

The Good

The food is really good at most of the restaurants onboard.
If you do any heavy drinking you don't have far to crawl.
You can enjoy the spa, shows, pool, or the adventure of checking out the destinations all in one place.
I like mashing my nuts in a lawn chair on the deck reading a book by the pool most of the time.
Its pretty relaxing because all you have to do is just ride and enjoy.

If I were you I would upgrade to a nice cabin. See if they get you off the ship in some sort of order. If they do, try to see what it takes to get off first so you have more time ashore. If you want internet purchase it before you leave. I think its more expensive once you get on the ship. Try to plan everything in advance including shore stuff. That way your not wondering around going ugh.....What do we do.
The destinations are up to you but I highly recommend a river tour in Europe or a south east Asia trip. Alaska is one of the really good ones I enjoy the most.

Enjoy your time away. Its always work for me so I see it different.

Post # 2 has some good points. Colleagues of mine have taken the Viking River Cruises and rave about them. We've been discussing going and have been getting their catalogs in the US Mail regularly.

Do your homework and pick a package you and your Mrs will enjoy together and make some memories. Life is short.

Never been and everyone that I know said it sucks "worst trip I ever did, all we did was use the gym because there was fuck all else to do"

Take it for what its worth - you're stuck on a floating hotel for whatever amount of time

We did a 4 day to the Bahamas leaving out of Florida with Royal Caribbean 20 years ago. We missed going to the cruise lines private island as the waves were too high. We had a fun time and couldn't get 100 yards away from the ship before we were swarmed by locals selling beads, baskets and weed. The cruise itself was nice with good food, gambling and plenty of booze. Like someone else said upgrade to the best room/package you can afford. We had a cabin in the rear with a patio to look out on the water from. I have heard the Alaska cruise is really nice and want to try that as well as one of the Viking River cruise trips. If you want to go somewhere and spend some time getting a good look around fly down to Paradise Island in the Bahamas and the beach there is amazing, pure white sand and crystal clear water. Hire a cab driver to take you around for the day and you will get to see way more of the island than just a shore trip from the cruise. Bring some anti diarrhea meds as there seem to be a lot of cruise trips that people get the squirts from pretty bad.

We took 2 cruises over 20 years ago. Very, very nice. Then we took another 2 years ago. Not near as good. Couldn't believe how many things you now had to pay extra for. Food was good but not as spectacular like our previous cruises. In short no more cruises for us.

Been on 2 and had a great time. But had a much better time taking the Mrs. to Costa Rica, renting a car, and just doing what we wanted when we wanted for a week. We had a blast seeing the rain forest and the volcanoes and did everything on our own schedule. Cost about the same as a cruise as well.

We have been on 7-8 cruises, mostly Carnival, some higher end cruise lines as well. I did not see a whole lot of difference for what you got as to opposed to how much more a high end ship costs. I Have left out of several ports,Puerto Rico,Miami,Charleston,NY,Baltimore. By far the cruise out of PR is the best one I have been on to the western Carribbean, especially this time of year if you want to be where its warm. The ones out of Miami Are nice too. BY far the worst one I ever was on was out of Charleston. The port is a dump, bunch of yahoo's who get last minute deals and get on,and the ship that leaves out of there, if you are on Carnival is the oldest in the fleet and is old and out dated. I don't think you can wrong for the money with a cruise, LOTS to do ,LOTS to see. We always like to do the sight seeing excursions,or rum factory tours,or the shopping tours. Just plan carefully, investigate the ship you are planning on taking, there are so many differences in size and age. I would not waste my time with Nassau and Freeport, dumps unless you are going to the beach that day on your excursion other than that there is not much there.

All inclusives are a nice option as well,we just got home from St.Martin at an all inclusive, nice, but not for me,lots of time just laying around on some beach. I like to see things and do things, not a beach guy. Do your homework and I hope you have a good time.

Thanks. If we do the cruise we'll do a balcony room. The Norwegian I went on in college was awesome. No extra cost (except alcohol)Plenty of night time entertainment, shore excursions were awesome, casino on board, amazing amounts of awesome food. We cruised out of Charleston then but that was 07. Now its a Carnival port. We'd definitely want a newer nicer ship but doesn't have to be brand new. The commercials show Carnival with the most to do on ship for sure.

I took a cruise last year on a Royal carribean. I would be a little choosier on which boat I picked, ours was kinda lame and they have a bunch of different boats to choose from. Nassau bahamas was gheto at the port, royal carribeans private island (co co cay) was kick ass. We were thinking of one of their bigger boats or norwegian next time, and a different location.
