i was just curious what causes the turbo's high pitch scream sound. is it high boost on the turbo, impeller speed, or the wastegate?

the reason i ask is because i know of 2 03 cobra mustangs running the same size turbo, and 20lbs of boost on both. but you can't hear the turbo on one of the cars, and the other screams like a jet.

i love that sound...

Impeller speed and compressor cover design seem to play the biggest factors, are they both running the same air cleaner set-up? Put a big K&N cone filter exposed on a Buick Grand National and you'll hear a day and night difference on the sound of the turbo.

An out-of-balance turbocharger will whine pretty bad. If it's screaming really loud, it might not have much longer to live.

Believe it or not, the turbine wheel is a source of much of the high-pitch sound. The exhaust pulses "ping" the blades and as it goes up in RPM, so does the pitch.
