prob the same reason you see those nitwits who keep sending money to nigerian email scams.
They talk themselves into believing that if they just do this, what they want will happen. Once he got past that point of "upgrading" to stage 2, he was probably so deep into believing that things would work out that he just kept pushing forward.
He should've stopped when it blew the first time and called UG performance.
