2001 Chevy Tahoe, bought new, original owner, well maintained. We bought it with the intention of towing. 5.3 motor, with I believe the 4L60E trans. We bought it with the towing package, trans cooler, etc. We also installed an aftermarket 2 qt extra deep pan. We have always used synthetic fluid. Now has 60,000 miles.
We do not use OD when towing. We tow a 24' trailer with a 2150 pound car, a quad and toolbox.

It is starting to bang when it goes into 2nd gear. If you accelerate easy, from a stop light, it bang. If you accelerate faster, it is ok.

Any ideas? Different ways to drive it? Any cures? Anything we can add to it (Lucas oil, etc) to help?

Thanks

Last one I had doing this had some broken parts inside it.

Drop the pan and see if there's any shrapnel in there, and post back.

If you do alot of towing the TAPs system may have upped the line pressure on ya and now its unloaded it hasnt quite learned to ease off on the shift. Do a search on the TAPs system GM uses. Or maybe the transmission is starting to slip and its trying to speed up the shift heh.

I have a 94 k1500 with the same trans, and gosh I wish I had a different transmission. If it's starting to shift hard, and it hasn't done it before, maybe the computer has detected a problem, and has raised the line pressure in order to prevent further damage from slipping the clutches. Probably get the codes read and go from there. I'm currently looking for a diesel with a MT for just these reasons.

A 4L60- E trans in my opinion is an excellent trans, you just have to treat it nice.
The weak points are the sun shell (wears or breaks the spline) and the pressure control systm.
The trans will ushually shift harsh after a long hot trip, but will work ok for local driving.
If it shifts harsh all the time, you need to check the hydraulic pressure(controled by the computer) as wellas some other things we can get into later.
If it shifts harsh after a hot trip or coming off the hiway the trans can be tricked into thinking its slipping, there is a filter screen in the valvebody that blocks hydraulic fluid into the psi solenoid causingsome sligt slippage, the computer picks up the slip and jacks the psi to try and fix the problem but also creates harsh shifts
Transgo sells a shift kit that can fix this issue and
can ushually be done in the vehicle.
Hope that helps
