Is there such a thing for cars? Or do they all vary too much by model of car?

There are general SAE specs for bolt torques (by bolt diameter & thread), if the manufacturer hasn't specified anything. With the advent of torque-to-yield bolts for automotive applications, it pays to get specific information about late-model vehicles.

With some of the new fasteners it is a combination of hitting a specified torque then rotating a specific number of degrees to achieve proper stretch.
